Full Report
Overview
Multicultural 50+ populations including African American/Black, Asian, and Hispanic/Latino are experiencing growth in cities across the country. This trend correlates with the age shift occurring nationwide. AARP produced these state fact sheets to demonstrate and analyze demographic trends facing multicultural populations, address certain needs and concerns specific to older adults in different states, outline AARP’s legislative priorities intended to accommodate these needs, and discuss AARP’s presence and activities in multicultural communities throughout the country.Key Points
The fact sheets provide statistical data regarding multicultural population size, location, and projected growth from 2011 to 2016 for targeted states across the country. Each state’s legislative priorities and engagement programs differ, depending on the specific needs of its 50+ multicultural population. Concerns and priorities of older adults that are consistent across most states include healthcare, financial security, home and community-based services, and Social Security and Medicare. The fact sheets available are: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Texas. How to Use
These fact sheets provide snapshots of demographic trends among multicultural populations (total and 50+) across the country, as well as AARP’s engagement in multicultural outreach programs and the specific needs and concerns of each state’s senior population. Planners, local officials and community leaders can use these fact sheets to gain an understanding of the cultural and economic impact of multicultural populations in a community. Additionally, planners and local officials can use these fact sheets as a resource when implementing programs to accommodate the needs of their own multicultural older adults.View full report:
