As part of a major public awareness and education campaign being undertaken by AARP Tennessee, this survey explored members' attitudes, behaviors, interests and opinions concerning physical fitness, and found that... Most believe they are in very good (31%) or good (50%) health. The majority believe that a person their age should exercise at least three times a week (77%) and that eating right (77%), getting regular check-ups (76%), maintaining a healthy weight (74%), and reducing stress (74%) are the most important actions for staying healthy. Although 59 percent think that exercise is very important to their health, they also feel other things are more important. While 68 percent have been physically active on a regular basis, 23 percent say they have not. Arthritis (32%) and injury (18%) are most often mentioned as physical conditions interfering with respondents' ability to exercise. This mail survey of 1,478 AARP Tennessee members was conducted from May 7 through June 10, 2003. The report was prepared by Joanne Binette and David Cicero, both of AARP Knowledge Management.
