That did not work so well with Alperen Sengun, who was better suited for drop coverages.” As much as the Rockets’ kids were overmatched, it was worth noting that 10 seasons ago, when Smith was in the fourth grade, Antetokounmpo was a teenaged rookie who was skinnier then than Smith or Green are now. That too brought a useful lesson. “We didn’t stop him. “Just going harder in the weight room, knowing that one day, my body can look like his,” Smith said. “Just keep working in the weight room, keep on getting stronger because you see how much of an advantage it is.” When the Rockets switched to a trapping defense, Morant split the traps like a lightning strike. “Matching up against him and really competing against him and really seeing how it is, it was fun.” Sengun also never doubted his ability in any matchup. “We’re trying to get out there and blitz him and he’s splitting the blitz. To his credit, he has not shown a hint of dissatisfaction with his unexpected role. But with Sengun coming off the bench, he could spend a bit more time with his back to the basket and the ball in his hands against other players besides Lopez, a redwood tree of a center in the lane. Or we weren’t all the way up. A coach’s job is to put his or her players in positions to do what they do best. That is the quality coaches often respect in their peers.”. That was the attribute, among others, that put Rudy Tomjanovich in the Hall of Fame and that he admired most (along with teams sticking to their style and strengths when under pressure) in others.
