It was music to the Spurs’ ears. Philadelphia 76ers fans had turned on their own at the Wells Fargo Center, three games into the season. Joel Embiid had 40 points as Philadelphia fell to 0-3 for the first time since 2016-17. The Spurs were proud to play a role in that. Tyrese Maxey added 25 points, Tobias Harris had 15 and James Harden 12. “We know how they are here,” guard Doug McDermott said with a smile. San Antonio (2-1) was more efficient defensively than in either of its first two games, where it yielded 131. “It felt good. “I’ve been in that situation before,” Poeltl said after the Spurs held on for a 137-134 victory. ” Vassell scored 22 points, including 17 in the second quarter, Keldon Johnson added 21, and Tre Jones came up big in the fourth quarter to help lift the Spurs to a crowd-displeasing win. The Spurs forced the 76ers into 12 turnovers and limited the second-chance points to 14. The Spurs forced the 76ers into 12 turnovers and limited the second-chance points to 14. Jones scored 10 of his 17 points in the final quarter to keep the 76ers at arm’s length. It marked the third 20-point game in as many outings to start the season for Johnson. Harden was 4 for 17 from the field, going 1 of 5 from 3-point range. It was the first time Johnson and Vassell posted back-to-back 20-point games together. ODDS AND ENDS Saturday night marked the first return to Philadelphia for Spurs assistant coach Brett Brown, who coached the 76ers from 2014 to 2020d. The Spurs won for assistant coach Brett Brown, who was fired as Philadelphia’s head coach after seven seasons in 2020. The club honored him with a video tribute during a first quarter timeout, which received a mix of cheers and boos. Asked after the game to name the best part of a night in which the Spurs led by as many as 21 points before nearly coughing the win away, coach Gregg Popovich had a two-word answer. No doubt, the victory was sweet for him. Here are three takeaways from Saturday’s victory, which sends the Spurs to Minnesota for two games next week at 2-1: 1. Vassell is ready for the next step. Keldon Johnson added 23 points, his second outing of 20-plus to start the season. Vassell’s aggressiveness during the preseason and first few games has been one of the major storylines surrounding the Spurs. Now that he is beginning to hit 3-pointers - after going 0-of-8 in the opener - his confidence is soaring. The next step for Vassell is to keep that relentlessness going for four quarters. Vassell was an absolute beast in the second quarter Saturday, making all seven of his field-goal tries — including a trio of threes — en route to 17 points in the period. By halftime, he had 20 points and seemed poised to set a career high for the second time in less than 24 hours. By the end of the third quarter, the Spurs had equaled their point total from the Charlotte game and seemed poised for an easy-does-it victory before things got wonky. Vassell had 23 points a night earlier in the Spurs’ win at Indiana. Instead, Vassell managed only one more basket in the second half. It was an important one, however. The Sixers had just taken a one-point lead on an Embiid dunk with 8:46 left in the game. Momentum felt like it was shifting to Philly. Welcome to the season, Vassell and Richardson The Spurs benefited from hefty bounce-back games from a pair of players who all but no-showed the opener. On the other end, Vassell answered with a tough contested jumper to beat the shot-clock horn, bailing out a key Spurs possession. The unlikely duo of Doug McDermott and Tre Jones took over from there, combining for 12 of the Spurs’ next 14 points. Save for poor shooting in the opener, it has been an eye-popping start to the season for Vassell. The next step is for him to stay aggressive for four quarters. 2. Vassell’s relentlessness has been a sight in the Spurs’ opening two games. Poeltl was courageous, again After the Spurs held on to win at Indiana, Popovich praised Poeltl for his “courage” in continuing to come through at the foul line after the Pacers went Hack-A-Jak. The 27-year-old Austrian was courageous again Saturday, in a different way. This time, he was the Spurs’ last line of defense against a runaway freight train named Joel Embiid. Yes, Embiid got 40 points. Poeltl, however, battled the MVP candidate down the stretch, especially on the boards. That was also a high for his brief Spurs career. Poeltl had seven rebounds in the fourth quarter, including five on the offensive glass. He also had eight points in the frame, four of them coming on putbacks. Poeltl’s final line (13 points, 11 rebounds) was solid enough. It paled in comparison to Embiid’s monster line, but that is OK. Poeltl gave the Spurs a fighting chance. The Spurs’ press break needs work. 3. Maybe the Sixers didn’t get Adam Silver’s memo According to an ESPN report Saturday, commissioner Adam Silver has called “hundreds” of meetings with NBA staff to discuss the issue of tanking this season. Teams have been put on notice. The 76ers - rumored to be a contender for the NBA championship, not Victor Wembanyama - must not have gotten the message. Philadelphia is an absolute mess to start the season. The Spurs burned all their timeouts trying to extricate themselves from the Pacers’ traps. With Embiid and Harden still unsure how to play off one another, up-and-coming guard Tyrese Maxey unsure how he fits into the mix, and a crunch-time defensive motor set somewhere near “idle,” the 76ers have looked far from an elite team in the early going. Perhaps Philly will get its act together over time. Give the Spurs credit for taking advantage of the 76ers when they were ripe to be gotten. Unlike a night earlier, when the Spurs gave up a 49-point fourth quarter at Indiana and nearly coughed up the game, they were poised down the stretch Saturday. It was the Sixers who couldn’t seem to get a stop and couldn’t seem to deal with the Spurs’ fast pace. As such, the Spurs can expect teams to throw all kinds of pressure at them in tight moments throughout the season. Perhaps the biggest basket of the game came after Philadelphia tried to press the Spurs in the full court. This worked well for the Pacers. This time, Jones got the ball up the court against Maxey, beat a half-hearted trap and found Poeltl for a layup. That put the Spurs ahead by eight points with 2:02 to go. It was enough to keep the 76ers at bay. 9, he — and not Jeremy Sochan — might have been the club’s first top-10 draft pick since Tim Duncan. .
