Pokémon 25 Things About Nurse Joy And Officer Jenny That Make No Sense
Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny are some of the most recognizable characters in Pokémon. But they don't make a lot of sense. Over the past 20 years of Pokémon video games and media, a lot has changed. Hundreds of new Pokémon have been introduced, new regions have been laid out for us to explore, and new characters have joined the games and the anime alike. Speaking of the anime, Ash has gone through a lot of changes too—even if he is still somehow 10 years old. He's caught new Pokémon, released old ones, and made countless new friends. Sure, Ash may not have actually won a Pokémon League yet, but he's grown a lot as a trainer. This has been in no small part due to the help of his ever-changing sidekicks! However, amongst all of this change, a few things about the Pokémon franchise have remained the same. The basic premise of each game is pretty much the same: win the Pokémon League while also defeating a nefarious evil team! In terms of the anime, Ash is still battling alongside his faithful Pikachu, and he's still a massive idiot at times. Plus, two very important characters have remained ever-present: Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny! Well, technically, they're more than two characters, since there are multiple Joys and Jennys out there. It's all a bit confusing... It's hard to imagine the Pokémon franchise without Joy and Jenny cropping up to heal people's Pokémon and solve some crimes. Still, much-loved as these characters are, there are a lot of things about them that just don't add up! The Pokémon games and anime are full of plot holes and unsolved mysteries, and a lot of them relate to these two women. Here are just some of the things about Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny that make no sense. THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY Family Resemblance
via: knowyourmeme.com Time for possibly the most obvious weird thing about Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny: the fact that they're all totally identical appearance-wise. In the Pokémon anime, this is written off as them all having a strong family resemblance. Call us skeptics, but it's pretty unlikely that all of these distant cousins, sisters-in-law, actual sisters, and other relatives would actually look so similar. Unless they're actually all clones, that is... Maybe there's some kind of conspiracy here that's yet to be uncovered? What s In A Name
via: artstation.com The next pretty blatantly bizarre thing about all of the Nurse Joys and Officer Jennys is the fact that they all have the same name. There is an official anime explanation for this which we'll get onto later. However, it doesn't solve a lot of the issues caused by this naming pattern. How confusing must it be for anyone who has to greet more than one Jenny or Joy? You can't just yell, "hey, Joy": about 50 women will all respond. Plus, having dozens of employees with the same name must get infuriatingly confusing in the workplace! It's just impractical. Jenny s Beloved Arcanine
via game-art-hq.com We couldn't talk about Officer Jenny without discussing one of the most blatant and most hilarious gaffes the anime has ever made. In the Indigo League episode "The Case of the K-9 Caper", Officer Jenny—a supposedly intelligent and well-trained law enforcement officer—forgets which Pokémon her beloved sidekick actually is. She audibly yells "Arcanine" when actually referring to her Growlithe. Sure, they're a part of the same evolutionary line, but still! You don't hear Ash constantly calling his Pikachu "Raichu," do you? Work Life Balance
via: Hacked Thunder on youtube.com Question: do the Nurse Joys present in either the Pokémon games or anime have any kind of work-life balance? In the anime, there's often one Nurse Joy for each major city. In the games, we see that the Pokémon Center is open 24/7 hours per day. Surely that's not the same Nurse Joy working one super-long shift? Nintendo themselves referenced this conundrum in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Occasionally, the Malie City Nurse Joy will take a break and chat to the playable character. She mainly complains about her hectic job and asserts her right to relaxation time! We Hope To See You Again
via: shinaka.tumblr.com In pretty much every single Pokémon game that's been created since the dawn of time, the Pokémon Center nurse has said the same thing once she's finished healing your Pokémon. "We hope to see you again" is basically the catchphrase of these characters. However, if you think about it, it's a pretty sinister thing for a nurse to say. Is she hoping that all of your Pokémon end up fainting or being reduced to low health in battle? Surely it would be better if she didn't see you again since that would mean your Pokémon are healthy and happy? Weird... In-Game Jenny
via: iurypadilha.deviantart.com Amongst Pokémon's anime fans, Officer Jenny is a much-loved and well-known character. However, the only time she appeared in a game was in Pokémon Yellow, when many aspects of the anime were incorporated into the basic plot of Red and Blue. It seems strange that other than that, Jenny is totally missing from the games! The in-game Pokémon Center nurse was modified after the first couple of generations to look more like Nurse Joy. They could have added Jenny in too! Anime fans would have loved it, and game fans wouldn't have thought much of it! Questionable Policing Skills
via: bryonic.deviantart.com Time for some brutal honesty: for supposedly competent police officers, the Pokémon world's Officer Jennys are often pretty inept. Has nobody thought of refreshing their training from time to time? Frequently, these officers come to completely incorrect conclusions regarding who's committed a crime. They rely on instincts that turn out to be wrong and aggressively pursue people who have quite blatantly done nothing wrong. They're also sometimes unable to solve mysteries that other characters can unravel in the space of a short anime episode. That's not great policing, Jenny! Jenny s Choice Of Pokémon
via: hohlram.deviantart.com Considering there are over 800 Pokémon out there for trainers to choose from, you've got to wonder why Officer Jenny picks the partners that she does. Okay, the Growlithes make sense—police dogs are pretty common, after all! However, other Pokémon that Jennys have owned over the years really don't seem suited to police work. Like, a Swanna or a Spinarak? Really? Jenny should just get herself a Dragonite, Garchomp, and Mega Charizard X and watch as criminals cower before her. It'd make her job so much easier. Falling For Brock s Advances
via: sagas293.deviantart.com If you've not gone back and watched the Pokémon anime as an adult, it's time for a warning. Brock's habit of falling for and bugging all of the female characters is even more annoying and frankly alarming when you've got some grown-up insight. Luckily, most of the women in the anime tell Brock the Creeper where to go... Except for Nurse Joy, for some reason. Every Joy that Brock encounters receives his usual "undying love" spiel, but none of them actually respond. Usually, they don't even realize he's flirting with them! Relying On The Meddling Kids
via: zerochan.net Not to keep on bringing up Officer Jenny's questionable policing, but have you ever noticed that Ash and his friends often solve more crimes than she does? There are dozens and dozens of anime episodes in which Ash and co stumble upon a Jenny who's struggling with a baffling crime, only for the young trainers to very quickly put things right. It's a bit concerning that Jenny basically has to rely on a bunch of kids to do her job for her! The Entire Pokémon World s Confusion
via: muchblock10.deviantart.com We've already established that every single Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny in the Pokémon anime looks identical and has the same name. We've also addressed the fact that this is super freaking weird. However, there's something else about this entire situation that's incredibly strange. Nobody in the Pokémon world seems to know about the identical Jennys and Joys! Whenever Ash meets a new traveling companion upon arriving in a new region, they inevitably get confused by the multiple Joys and Jennys. Shouldn't the situation be pretty obvious to the whole world by now? Apparently, it's been kept oddly secret. Those Darn Kids
via: zerochan.net Not only does Officer Jenny constantly let a bunch of children do her policing work for her, she regularly accuses the same set of kids of being criminals themselves. Why is Jenny so quick to jump to the conclusion that Ash and his friends are lawbreakers? From literally the very first Pokémon anime episode, Jenny has constantly assumed that they're thieves, bandits, or general delinquents, despite having no evidence to suggest this is the case. Maybe she'd solve more crimes if she stopped assuming they were all perpetrated by innocent children! The Squirtle Squad Disaster
via: mit-man.deviantart.com It's time to take a deep dive into one of Officer Jenny's most ridiculously inept moments: the incident involving the Squirtle Squad. To enlighten anyone who's not seen this particular anime episode, this group of abandoned Squirtle caused trouble in a small Kanto town—and in the original Japanese version actually threatened to end Misty. Apparently, Jenny could do nothing to stop these errant Pokémon, and it was down to Ash to save the day as usual. Seriously? Could Jenny in no way stop these bloodthirsty Water-types? Not even with, say, a Grass-type Pokémon?! So many questions... A Family Business
via: pikiru.deviantart.com In the Pokémon anime, it's very rare to come across a healthcare professional or a police officer who's not a Joy or Jenny. This begs a very important question: how did one family manage to gain such a monopoly over the emergency services? Do applicants to these jobs who aren't a Jenny or Joy get immediately rejected because they don't fit the required mold? If so, how on earth is this even allowed to happen?! Maybe there are non-Joy or Jenny workers in these fields, and we just don't see them... Or maybe it's a huge conspiracy. Specialist Nurse Joys
via: takuyarawr.deviantart.com In the real world, doctors and nurses often specialize in one area of healthcare—in brain surgery, for example, or children's' medicine. However, in the Pokémon world, the healthcare system seems a bit odd. For one, every Nurse Joy has the generic job of "healing Pokémon". Does this mean they all have to learn everything there is to know about every single Pokémon? You'd think that healing a Wurmple might be a bit different to healing a Blaziken... However, specialist Nurse Joys don't seem to exist. Well, except for a therapist Nurse Joy that Ash visits in Johto! International Jenny And Joys
via: jenny-liu.deviantart.com In the Pokémon anime, it's established in the canon that every Joy and Jenny comes from the same family—and that these two families are themselves distantly related! However, this explanation doesn't make much sense when you consider that Jennys and Joys are present pretty much internationally in the Pokémon world. How does one family have dozens of members living in every single region who all look the same and are around the same age? Like, how is that physically possible? The theory that the Jennys and Joys are clones is looking more and more plausible... Brock s Eagle Eye
via: poketrainer-ashlex.deviantart.com Apparently, the fact that Brock is a massive creep when it comes to women does actually come in handy sometimes. Of course, that doesn't negate all of the stuff he puts women through... Anyway, Brock is the only person who can tell every Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny apart, based on weird details like the length of their eyelashes. This "talent" was useful when an Officer Jenny was impersonated in an episode of the Advanced Generation anime series, and Brock could unmask the impostor. Still... How does he not have a restraining order against him yet? The Unova Jennys
via: enecoo.tumblr.com In general, every single region's group of Officer Jenny has a very similar uniform. They all wear blue, sport the same hairstyle, and generally look totally identical. However, the Unova region's Jennys are the exception to this rule. For some reason, their uniform is completely different from that of every other region's police force! The Jennys sport a tan outfit instead of the classic blue and also have much shorter hair. We're not necessarily complaining—a bit of variety is good! However, you have to wonder why Unova specifically decided to be different. Retired Nurse Joys
via: 2234083174.deviantart.com As well as being totally identical looks-wise, every Nurse Joy in the Pokémon anime appears to be exactly the same age. It's very rare to see an older or even elderly Nurse Joy, which doesn't really make much sense! Can they only fulfill the role of a nurse when they're young? Plus, where are all of the retired and older Joys? They all just seem to have vanished—and the same is true of older Officer Jennys. We could very well be onto another conspiracy here... Telling Them Apart
via: queencarlotta.deviantart.com Once all of the Nurse Joys and Officer Jennys of the Pokémon world realized that only that creepy guy Brock could tell them apart, they clearly decided that they needed to be distinguished somehow. In the anime, it's revealed that Jennys and Joys from different cities wear badges in different colors to set them apart. However, these badges are tiny! You have to look very closely at each woman's hat or lapel to realize there's even a badge there, let alone notice its color. It's a very inefficient system!
