PRESENTED BY BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Goals from Ashley Meier and Shannon Mayrose propelled the No. 5 Virginia Tech women’s soccer game to their sixth-straight win on Sunday at Thompson Field. The rainy 2-0 victory against UNC Wilmington(3-3-0) gave Tech two wins for the Virginia Tech Tournament. “I’m happy with the result,” head coach Chugger Adiar said. “They played us tough today and we missed some opportunities I would have liked to put away, but we got the win. I think our tired legs from Friday’s game showed up a little as well.” Fresh off of an overtime victory against Atlantic Coastal Conference rival Wake Forest on Friday, the Seahawks came looking to challenge the undefeated Hokies. The Hokies (6-0) started off the scoring quickly in the sixth minute of play. After flooding the UNC Wilmington defense with multiple quality chances, sophomore Murielle Tiernan picked up a ball in the middle of goalie box and fired a shot. Wilmington’s goalie saved the ball from the goal, but Meier picked up the rebound and scored her second goal of the year to put the Hokies up 1-0. The rest of the first half was steadily controlled by Tech, who missed goals on several chances, notching 12 first-half shots. The Seahawks had one shot that nearly flew past Tech goalkeeper Caroline Kelly, but a leaping save kept the shutout secure. FINAL SCORE: Hokies 2, UNCW 0. In the 70th minute, Mayrose headed in her third goal of the year off of a free kick from Kelsey Loupee. The goal moves Mayrose into sixth all-time in the Virginia Tech record book for career points with 56 and into a tie for sixth in career goals with 22. UNC Wilmington leaves with one win and one loss in the Virginia Tech Tournament. This was the first time the Hokies failed to score at least three goals this season. Tech will be back in action at Longwood on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. ET in Farmville, Virginia.
