Shovels Ready for Sheridan Green House
President of Green House Living for Sheridan Doug Osborn announced that the United States Department of Agriculture approved a long-term finance loan in the amount of $5.24 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Receipt of the loan allowed pledged funds to be released from the Wyoming Business Council in the amount of $891,217, meaning that all needed funds have been raised. The total project cost is $8.2 million.
“We are shovel-ready,” Osborn said.
Sheridan is the first community in the nation to accomplish this as a grassroots effort. It all started with the passion of a few committed citizens and grew to receive community-wide response.
The Green House cottages will enhance Sheridan’s elder care alternatives. Under this model, elders receive assistance and care in small homes that meet all required state and regulatory criteria for licensure as skilled nursing facilities. In the Green House cottages, a dozen elders will live in a home where the centerpiece is a hearth and open kitchen. A small, self-managed staff will provide personal care and meals, joining elders at the table. Nurses and other professionals will provide clinical care. Family, friends, pets and plants will be a part of daily living. These homes accept private payments, private insurance, as well as Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements. The cost is the same, or in some cases, somewhat less than in a traditional nursing home.
Although the Green House concept is proven and in use in several other states, when the construction crew breaks ground in Sheridan, they will be building the first Green House in Wyoming.
