International City/County Management Association’s (ICMA) mission and vision is “to create excellence in local governance by developing and fostering professional management to build sustainable communities that improve people’s lives worldwide.”The decisions made by ICMA's members affect millions of individuals in thousands of communities, including small towns, large metropolitan areas, and everything in between.

Key Points

ICMA’s core activities include:advocacy; an annual conferencewhere local government managers come together to network, discuss key management issues, and review major local government decisions, amongst other things; ethics education and training; and survey research. Further details regarding all of these activities are available on the ICMA website, along with news and events of interest to members and other local leaders; links to state associations, related associations, international affiliates, and local governments; and information regarding ICMA priorities. Center for Sustainable Communities:a place to find best practices, tools, and resources to help local governments build more sustainable communities. Next Gen Initiative: an initiative to grow the diversity of individuals in the local government management field. Performance Management:a program to encourage and help local governments to use performance data for establishing goals and outcomes, for setting targets of performance, and for communicating to citizens. Public Policy: white papers and fact sheets to advance good governance. Fund for Professional Management:a way to educate citizens about the role and benefits of professional local government management.
