In December and January, AARP NC is conducting Senior Hunger listening sessions with the seven Feeding America Food Banks in North Carolina to strategically plan, as partners, how we can implement food assistance programs to those seniors in need of food assistance. With the economic downturn, more and more seniors are making difficult decisions as to whether to eat, pay bills or buy medications.
Food banks and their affiliate food organizations are seeing a significant increase in seniors asking for help. Here are some suggestions as to how anyone can help, based on needs seen by AARP NC and the Food Banks: recruit volunteers to do pre-screening enrollment for FNS (food stamps/Food and Nutrition Services); organize food drives among civic organizations, churches, universities and senior centers, etc.; conduct training on aging services and programs on aging for food bank staff members to raise awareness as to how to make referrals; target specific faith-based organizations for FNS enrollment; and collaborate with existing events such as the Dine in and Dine Out campaign, hunger walks/runs, etc. to increase awareness about senior hunger in North Carolina.
