AARP Members Make Their Voices Heard

President Obama recently signed for one more year.

AARP applauds President Obama, the U.S. Senate, and the U.S. House for their work on the Medicare and Medicaid Extenders Act of 2010, which stops a scheduled 25% pay cut for Medicare doctors. In Massachusetts, about 20,000 physicians treat more than one million Medicare patients.

AARP Members Voices Heard br

Leading up to this victory, more than 10,000 AARP members in Massachusetts contacted the state's Congressional delegation – telling them to keep doctors in Medicare. Their voices were heard. According to AARP research, the vast majority of AARP members in the Bay State – across party lines – . And, most said they would view their elected officials more favorably if they fought to protect payments to Medicare doctors.

AARP members in Massachusetts also want to see a long-term solution that fixes the flawed Medicare physician payment system, created more than ten years ago, which pays doctors less than what it costs to care for Medicare patients.

AARP calls on Congress to make this issue an urgent priority in 2011. To provide Medicare doctors with stability and seniors with the peace of mind they can keep seeing the doctors they trust, the unstable system must be replaced.
