Legacy Fund

by Donnan Runkel - 10/01/2011 Scholarships for students studying gerontology at the University of Alaska will soon be available, thanks to a project begun three years ago.

In 2008, every AARP state office received funding to celebrate AARP's 50th birthday. The Alaska state office used its allocation as seed money for a scholarship fund. The fund has grown through donations from AARP members and in June reached the $25,000 threshold necessary to endow a scholarship.

"The more money we raise, the more scholarships we'll award," says Ann Secrest, spokeswoman for AARP Alaska. To make a tax-deductible contribution to the AARP Alaska Gerontology Scholarship (fund number 20405), write to University of Alaska Foundation, P.O.
