An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure when it comes to fighting the increasingly commonplace crime of identity theft. People can avoid becoming victims if they take the time to shred sensitive documents, such as old bank and financial statements and medical bills.
“We’re pleased to continue offering this valuable service to the public,” said Diane Millea, an AARP Information Center volunteer who is coordinating this year’s shredding event. “Bring your unwanted private papers, cancelled checks, credit card offers and other documents with any personal information you want to shred.”
The drive-through shredding session will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the east end of the top level of The Center Mall’s parking lot. People should enter the parking lot at 41st & Center Sts. State-of-the-art mobile shredders will be set up on site, where anyone can watch their papers being destroyed. Unloading assistance will be provided. For more information, call (402) 398-9568.
The upcoming event gives consumers an opportunity to have their confidential documents destroyed free of charge by trained Shred-It staff, said sales manager Jeff Simons. Shred-It is a document destruction company with more than 150 branches in North America.
“Consumer fraud and identity theft are becoming an epidemic in our communities,” he said. “To increase awareness and promote prevention, we organize community shred events in the cities where we have a presence. People can have peace of mind knowing that their documents have been shredded beyond recognition.”
AARP Nebraska is co-sponsoring another free shredding event in Scottsbluff on June 11. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Monument Mall’s main entrance parking lot at 2302 Frontage Rd. For more information, contact Kathy Carney at (308) 631-9509.
Shredding is limited to two bags or boxes of paper per vehicle at both locations. Free shredding is offered to consumers who bring their household documents; no businesses please.
