The product, which comes in a satisfyingly round globe of a container, is a zero-pigment formula that you can apply with your fingertips, with no hint of the colour you’d usually expect in sight. Cult Beauty According to Becca, the foundation, which is part of the new Zero collection, which also includes a glossy no-pigment highlighter, Zero Collection, the launch uses ingredients like glycerin and hyaluronic acid to ‘diffuse light around the face, blur imperfections and smooth the appearance of skin.’ It’s hydrating, and has a cooling effect that will be particularly pleasant in hot weather. It also promises to control oil and leave your skin with a transparent matte finish. On one hand, we’re all for fuss-free application, not to mention the omission of the chore of having to find a product that seamlessly matches our skin. But can a foundation that isn’t actually technically visible really make a significant difference, and justify the £29 price tag? Cult Beauty The early reviews are split: on Cult Beauty, the exclusive UK stockist of the Becca Zero No Pigment Virtual Foundation line, some commenters say they love the dewy glow it gives to their complexion, while others report seeing no improvements after use. ‘I had decided to stop wearing foundation for the summer months as I felt like my skin couldn’t breathe enough with foundation when this product launched and decided to give it a try. I couldn’t be more satisfied, it’s super hydrating and it does blur imperfections and mattify,’ says one happy customer. ‘LOVE IT! Will be using it the entire summer!’ Cult Beauty However, another writes: ‘I do like it, but you have to have perfect skin to wear it with nothing on top. I plan on using it like a primer, before concealing my dark circles and spots. I don’t wear foundation, so this is like a moisturising layer before everything else. So don’t expect miracles with this, it’s just a cooling hydrating gel really, but a really nice one.’ A third went as far as to say they’d ‘wasted £29 in a pot of nothing’, adding ‘I wasn’t expecting any miracles since it’s pigment-free, but I thought that mix of synthetic ingredients would be able to at least blur out minimal imperfections… Anything, really. No blur, no matt, nothing. Now I feel like a fool.’ Becca Zero No Pigment Virtual Foundation, £29, Cult Beauty In short, the jury is still out, and if you’re a fan of full coverage, longwear offerings like Estee Lauder’s Double Wear or Urban Decay’s All Nighter Liquid Foundation, the Becca clear foundation probably won’t be enough for you. But if you love the thought of a smoothing, refining balm that will give you a ‘your skin but better’ effect with a natural look, it could be worth investigating – especially as temperatures continue to soar for the rest of the summer.
