Rex Features Fukunaga will replace Danny Boyle, who was previously appointed as the director of the upcoming film, after it was announced that the English star – behind the likes of Slumdog Millionaire and 28 Days Later – stepped down from the project due to ‘creative difference.’ The film’s producers, Barbara Brocoli and Michael G Wilson, revealed in a statement on Thursday that Fukunaga, best known for his work on Emmy-award winning TV series True Detective, has since been signed up to work on Bond 25. ‘We are delighted to be working with Cary,’ they said. ‘His versatility and innovation make him an excellent choice for our next James Bond adventure.’ Rex Features Fukunaga also broke his silence following the news, telling Indiewire: ‘I’ve wanted to do one of these [Bond films] for a long time, so that’s not new. So right now it’s just kind of dealing with the shock that it’s real and the honour obviously and now the responsibility.’ So who exactly is the critically acclaimed director? As well as being very easy on the eye (yes, we already have a crush on him), Fukunaga has an impressive CV and accolade to match. His debut feature film, Sin Nombre, premiered at the Sundance film festival in 2009 and follows the story of a young boy who is a member of the MS-13 gang and a girl trying to cross into the US from the Mexican border. The entire film is in Spanish and earned Fukunaga awards for both directing and cinematography. Rex features His follow-up came in 2011 with the release of Jane Eyre, the Oscar-winning drama starring Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender, and Jamie Bell. Fast forward to 2015 and Fukunaga next project, Beasts of No Nation, was released becoming one of the first films to be released on Netflix and in cinemas on the same day. Despite his success in film, Fukunaga is best known for his work in TV. Back in 2014, he won an Emmy for directing the first eight episodes of True Detective season one. He also recently worked on TNT limited series The Alienist starring Daniel Brühl, Luke Evans, and Dakota Fanning. His latest work can be seen on the highly anticipated Netflix original series Maniac starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill which launches on Netflix today (21 September). Safe to say he’s a qualified chap then.
