YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Fashion Small Brand Spotlight Manchester-based ROOP By You Magazine - July 7, 2021 Every week, we shine a spotlight on the best small brands we think are worth shouting about. We love our great British high street, but there are so many fantastic independent brands out there making clothes, accessories, homeware and more from a place of passion and love and we need to support them – now more than ever. From fashion and beauty to homeware, accessories and food, we bring you the best small businesses you need on your radar. This week we chat with Natasha Fernandes Anjo, founder and designer of ROOP, the Manchester-based handbags and accessories brand best known for its colourful furoshiki bags that have been spotted on influencers all over Instagram, including @meganellaby and @sara_waiste. ROOP How did ROOP come about? ROOP is my nickname but not everyone knew that so I got to call it after myself without looking like it was all about me! ROOP was born out of a lack of purpose in my life. I was a nanny and worked in a fabric shop part-time; both made me get back in touch with my creativity. After two years of making and trying various sewing projects, I saw a blog about furoshiki bags and my bag was born. The rest is just a lot of hard work and me laughing through everything I don’t know! What three words would you use to describe ROOP? Fun, colourful and scrunched. I like to keep in touch with my customers to see what colours and products they would like to see, I make it all for them so I like to keep a community vibe about the business. When it comes to making I’m kind of self-taught so I guess it’s all made the ROOP way! View this post on Instagram A post shared by ROOP (@itsrooper) What does a typical day look like for you? Wake up and run for the train – I’m always late. Me and the dogs walk to the studio and then every day is different. My first priority is making any orders and after that, I’ll either choose new fabrics, work on new designs, shoot some content and eat lots of snacks. What’s the best and worst thing about running your own small business? The best thing, it’s all your own choices and decisions. The worst thing? it’s all your own choices and decisions. How does sustainability play a part in ROOP? My whole operation is sustainable. I only use leftover, deadstock and vintage fabrics. We use every last scrap we can and all our packaging is recyclable. Everything we make is limited edition or one-off, sustainability is at the heart of what we do. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ROOP (@itsrooper) Which piece is your current favourite? It’s a toss-up between my Monica bag in cow print or lime, don’t make me choose!! Anything exciting planned for the brand this year? ROOP bridal is finally launching and I’m so excited.
