YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Beauty Nadiya Hussain on what make up means to her and her IT Cosmetics partnership By Kanika Banwait - September 28, 2022 Nadiya Hussain stole the nation’s hearts when she won The Great British Bake Off, all the way back in 2015. Her popularity and immense baking talent has meant since then, she’s released seven cookbooks and an autobiography, as well as a series of novels and children’s books. She’s also previously worked on a shoe edit with high street retailer Next – but now? Nadiya has stepped into the world of beauty. Nadiya, who’s been our YOU cover star twice, has teamed up with IT Cosmetics for her first ever beauty campaign: ‘Beautiful Without IT, Beautiful With IT’. The aim of the campaign is to inspire confidence and champion authenticity, so we can see why the baking star was a natural fit. We chatted to Nadiya about her new collaboration and personal experience with the world of make up, including the first product she ever bought, the struggles she’s faced, and what her daughter ‘borrows’ the most… Hi Nadiya It’ s so exciting to hear about your first beauty partnership What difference have you noticed using IT Cosmetics in comparison to other make up brands It’s really important for me to work with brands that I like, that I use and that I believe in. It’s that mixture of skincare and make up combined that makes me feel really good about putting IT Cosmetics products on my skin. It feels looked after and nourished, but I can still wear make up at the same time. I would never put my face or my name to something that I didn’t enjoy using. We love the message that IT Cosmetics enhances what you ve already got – what do you love the most about your skin My skin is one of those things that I’ve always battled with. People always say to me ‘you’ve got lovely skin’. For such a long time, that was the skin I felt most uncomfortable in, because of its colour. My skin colour meant that I suffered racist abuse. I didn’t always feel included. As a teen, I couldn’t just go into Boots and pick up a foundation that matched my skin colour. It was really hard to feel proud of something that gave me so much trouble. The CC cream does everything I need it to do without losing myself. I don’t want to be lost in my make up, I want it to make what I already have glow. The make up industry has come a long way in terms of diversity in products and models but there s still plenty of room for improvement How was your relationship with make up affected by the lack of diversity as you didn’ t feel included I didn’t buy my first lipstick until I was 29. I didn’t buy my first foundation until I was about 30, because I just couldn’t find anyone to help me. Seven or eight years ago, I couldn’t find the right thing for my skin. If you’ve never done it before, you don’t feel confident enough – even at 30 – to walk in and say ‘this is what I’m looking for’. You don’t trust anyone to do the job properly, so of course that affected my relationship with my own looks and the beauty industry. My daughter will be 12 soon, and she loves make up. You’d never know she was my child. She’s so confident. And when I say ‘I don’t think I can find my shade’, she’s like, ‘I’ll find you your shade’. She has so much more confidence in the beauty industry than I did, and that’s lovely to see, because that’s one less hurdle for her to jump. Lots of people might think ‘it’s just make up’, but it’s not ‘just make up’. For a lot of us, it’s the thing that gives us confidence, it’s the thing that we use as armour sometimes. Is there anything about your skin or make up that you re self-conscious about now One thing I’ve always been really self-conscious of is my hyperpigmentation, which is really natural for South Asian skin. I still have a little bit of it around my mouth. When I work with make up artists, I ask them to make sure they cover it. What was the first item of make up you ever bought I used to always avoid going to beauty counters because they were quite disappointing. But the first thing I ever bought was from a company called Black Up. They sold foundations for darker women. It was the first time I’d seen a foundation colour that could possibly work for me. But I wasn’t brave enough to buy the foundation so I bought my first ever lipstick, which I still own. It’s a deep purple, like an aubergine that’s almost black. To think that was my first lipstick – that’s bold. But I love that colour. I felt maleficent wearing that lipstick. I felt wicked and wonderful at the same time. I felt so powerful. It’s scary what a little bit of make up can do. When your daughter first started wearing make up did you have any guidance for how to approach it No. She guides me more than I guide her. She’s very artistic with make up so she looks at it differently to me. When she’s older, she wants to work in prosthetics. For me, it’s a really good base. But for her, it’s art. She will use an eyeshadow and mix it with solution and turn it into eyeliner. I love her confidence. I imagine if I felt more included at her age, who knows what confidence I could have had. I let her lead the way. She ‘borrows’ everything from me. Day to day, she loves my IT cosmetics lip serum. It has a little bit of colour but it’s really hydrating. I was like, ‘okay, you need to give my stuff back’. The deal is, she’ll take things during the week but she’ll return them all on Friday. What’ s your favourite IT Cosmetics product to use For me, it’s the CC cream. It’s lightweight and it gives me the coverage that I need without looking too cakey or layered. The biggest thing for me is that it has SPF 50 in it – I struggle to find SPF for my skin that hasn’t got a white sheen. Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream with SPF 50, £33, IT Cosmetics I also use the Confidence Cream morning and night – it’s so nourishing. Plus, as I have a few lines around my eyes, if you rub in the Bye Bye Lines Hyaluronic Acid serum, the lines are gone. It’s amazing! What does your everyday beauty routine look like I’ll use an oil cleanser and then I moisturise, and then I put Vaseline on my lips and brows. A quick CC cream all over, then I do my brows very quickly. A bit of blush – I love having a bit of a flushed face without looking like Pat Butcher – and maybe lipstick if I feel like it. And finally we’ ve got to get a make up hack from you What tips do you have to stop make up melting off when you re cooking in front of hot ovens and stoves One of the best tips my make up artist gave me was to spray your brush or beauty sponge with setting spray. It mixes in with the make up so it stays on your face. Whenever I wear make up, I always brush it on with a brush that’s been sprayed with setting spray!
