They’re a great way to explore other cultures, see all the sights and eat your bodyweight in incredible food all in the space of a few days! But what to pack? Packing for a city break is a world away from packing for your regular holiday. It requires a handful of great pieces that will provide variety, comfort and style, allowing you to cram in as much as possible without regretting your outfit choices. Below are six core items that are always on my packing list, and will help you create a capsule wardrobe to see you through even the most jam-packed of itineraries. THE COMFORT DRESS THAT PACKS A PUNCH Maxi dress, £55.99, Reserved Dresses are a must for any holiday, but city breaks come with an activity level that requires you to consider comfort and practicality. Opt for a cut that’s breezy and doesn’t cling, allowing you to move and your skin to breathe. This gorgeous maxi dress from Reserved is light and flowy, with a corseted back and tie-straps allowing you to adjust the fit, and the print just oozes sun, sea and cocktails. CHIC SANDALS THAT GO THE DISTANCE Leather sandals, £99.95, Massimo Dutti Your feet should be a top priority when packing for a city break – you’ll put them through their paces. Whether it’s sightseeing, shopping, or exploring cobbled old towns you’ll want to ensure your choice of footwear doesn’t let you down. TAILORED SHORTS FOR DAY-TO-NIGHT DRESSING Bermuda shorts, £25.99, Zara It goes without saying that shorts are on this packing list, but find yourself a pair that work for multiple scenarios. A tailored linen pair are a perfect example. The fabric is breathable and great for day, whilst the tailored cut makes them perfect for evening. The addition of a heel or some gold jewellery is all you need to transform this soft green Zara pair from day-to-night. WIDE-LEG TROUSERS THAT GO WITH EVERYTHING Wide-leg linen trousers, £90, Boden White wide-leg linen trousers are a firm favourite for every jet-setter, and for very good reason. Not only are they extremely comfortable, but they work with so many pieces you already own. Layer over a swimsuit for a walk along the beach, pair with a matching linen shirt or vibrant t-shirt for a walk around town, or add a sleek cami and barely-there sandals for dinner. An item you can get three looks from is efficient packing at its best! THE SPACIOUS TOTE BAG Canvas striped bag, £39.50, Marks & Spencer A large but practical (and of course stylish) bag is essential. There’s so much more to carry around with you on holiday than you do at home, and you’re going to want space for all your souvenirs! This great tote from M&S is chic in go-with-everything stripes, but also practical with its spacious size, internal zipped pockets, and adjustable drawstring fastening to keep everything safe and secure. THE PERFECT-FOR-LAYERING JACKET Overshirt, £49.90, Uniqlo The weather can change at the drop of a hat so layering is key, but layering pieces can end up being the bulk of your packing if you’re not clever with it. That’s why the shacket (shirt jacket) is the perfect city-break option. They’re thick enough to keep away the chill of an evening, but light enough to chuck in a tote just in case the sun goes in for an hour or two. The shirt element gives them a tailored cut, making them a perfect smart-casual essential.
