Obi-Wan Kenobi Deepfake Brings Back Original Actor Alec Guinness 14 June 2022 by Oisin Kuhnke As we near the end of Obi-Wan Kenobi, one fan has created a deepfake that replaces Ewan McGregor with original actor Alec Guiness. Unfortunately, our time with Obi-Wan Kenobi is almost at an end. It’s been quite the journey so far, and it’s been interesting to see a middle aged Obi-Wan. But of course, this particular iteration of Obi-Wan features Ewan McGregor in the role. In the original trilogy, the role was played by none other than Alec Guiness. Sadly, Guinness passed away in 2000, but McGregor has certainly filled in the shoes quite well. However, a fan has now made an Obi-Wan deepfake that replaces McGregor’s face with Guiness’, and it’s a sight to behold.ADVERT ADVERT Now a word of warning, if you’re put off by the uncanny valley, this one might be a bit uncomfortable for you. Some shots definitely look better than others, but when it works, it really works. who made the deepfake The deepfake was produced by YouTuber stryder HD, who has done a number of other deepfakes on their channel. They’ve done deepfakes of Brad Pitt as Thor, and Tom Cruise as Iron Man. Star Wars Fans Told ‘Don’t Choose To Be Racist’ Following Attack On Obi-Wan Actress But if anything, this particular deepfake really shows us that it was right to bring McGregor back to the role. As a number of commenters on stryder’s video point out, McGregor is great as Obi-Wan. And it wouldn’t have been necessary to utilise any CGI technology to make any actor look more like Guiness.ADVERT ADVERT Credit: Lucasfilm Disney has done that on a few occasions with Star Wars. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker both used similar tech to bring back old actors. Rogue One brought back both a young Carrier Fisher and Peter Cushing. But it certainly was a bit too uncanny at the time. But if Star Wars does go on forever like Kathleen Kennedy says, we might start seeing the technology used more and more.
