Die Fertigung im Verbund mehrerer, räumlich getrennter Werke ermöglicht die Nutzung standortspezifischer Wettbewerbsvorteile durch kleine, spezialisierte Produktionsstandorte in großen, ressourcenstarken Unternehmen. Georg Rilling zeigt, daß die Koordination eines solchen Produktionsverbundes erfolgreich ist, wenn es gelingt, bestehende Informationsasymmetrien auszugleichen oder die aus ihnen resultierenden Risiken zu minimieren. Anhand von Beispielen erfolgreicher Produktionsverbunde analysiert der Autor neue Koordinationsformen. Er beschreibt, wie eine polyzentrische Wahrnehmung der Koordinationskompetenz und der Einsatz von Monitoring-Instrumenten zu einer wirksamen Abstimmung führen und warum Cost- oder Profit-Center-Konzepte diese Koordinationsaufgabe nicht vollständig erfüllen.
