Lexus ROV Is The Off-Road Adventure Buggy We Never Expected

There have been rumors that the Lexus GS will be revived as a hydrogen-fuel cell vehicle based on the Toyota Mirai. Lexus doesn't currently sell any fuel cell vehicles, but the Japanese automaker is exploring hydrogen-fueled vehicles with the Recreational Off-highway Vehicle (ROV) concept, a hydrogen-powered off-road buggy. Lexus says the one-off concept is designed to show that "exhilarating driving can co-exist with a carbon-free society centred on responsible mobility." With its exposed suspension, external rollcage, and chunky off-road tires, the ROV looks unlike any other current Lexus and is designed for serious off-roading. Lexus Lexus Lexus Lexus The only recognizable design cue carried over from Lexus production cars is the brand's signature spindle grille. It's compact, too, measuring 122.8 inches long, 67.9 inches wide, and 70.8 inches high. In contrast to the rugged exterior, the interior is luxurious and comfortable, featuring a leather steering wheel, a sculpted shift knob, and synthetic leather seats. Lexus says the interior design is inspired by the Tazuna concept with a meter that instantly reads necessary information the driver needs so they can focus on driving. Powering the off-road buggy concept is a 1.0-liter hydrogen engine that works like a gasoline engine but with a high-pressure tank storing compressed hydrogen, which is delivered via a direct hydrogen injector. Lexus Lexus Lexus Lexus According to Lexus, the hydrogen engine sounds like a combustion engine but produces "close to zero emissions, with a negligible amount of engine oil burned during driving." "The Lexus ROV is our response to the growing passion for the outdoors and adventurous spirit of luxury consumers," said Spiros Fotinos, Head of Lexus Europe. "As a concept, it fuses our desire to also develop lifestyle-oriented products with our ongoing research into new technologies that contribute to carbon neutrality. As well as delivering a concept that is thrilling to drive, it has near zero emissions thanks to its hydrogen-powered engine."
