Watch A Rivian R1T Dominate Snow In Drift Mode

Aimen Shawki is the manager of Rivian's Battery Validation Engineering department and the proud owner of a Rivian Blue R1T. He took delivery of his car one week ago, proving that not even Rivian's employees could jump the line to get their hands on one. Demand for America's first EV truck is enormous, and Rivian currently has a 55,400 R1T and R1S backlog. The bosses were the first to take delivery of the R1S SUV, but, you know, some jobs have nice perks. In any case, Shawki celebrated the occasion by taking his truck on a trip from Long Beach to Tahoe. That's a round trip of roughly 1,000 miles. The snow proved to be no match for the R1T, even in Drift Mode. Now, playing in the snow in Drift Mode is perhaps not a good example to set, but as you can see in the video above, there was loads of space. And who can honestly say that they would not have done the same? Have drift mode, will go sideways. Rivian CEO, RJ Scaringe, has been saying its products would be fun from the beginning. He was also caught going sideways in an R1T earlier this year.
For the record, the Rivian does not have a Snow Mode. You'd think this is a must-have mode, but the immediate torque means this car operates unlike any other off-roader before. The Rivian Owner's Forum recently uncovered a few worrying things in documents Rivian filed with the EPA. In short, the maximum charging capacity is capped at 210 kW, and the Conserve Mode is not as efficient as initially thought. The big shocker was the lack of a heat pump for the battery pack. Unlike an ICE car, an EV battery pack has an extremely narrow thermal operating range. If it can't be heated to the optimal temperature, the range drops significantly. Rivian claims a range of around 300 miles, dropping to 270 miles in cold weather. Some owners have reported a drop of about 40% in colder climates. We hope Rivian fixes this omission soon because the truck looks like an absolute riot in the snow. As we said before, we firmly believe the future of off-roading is electric. aimenshawki/Instagram
