There' s Something Special About This Porsche 911

Porsche figured it'd be popular, but never in its wildest dreams did it believe the $250,000 MSRP would hit the $1 million mark on the private market within a year of launching. Offered to select and loyal Porsche customers only, many of them decided to take the money and run. Porsche wasn't happy and it took names. It also took action to cool down the 911 R resale market by launching the 911 GT3 Touring. Like the 911 R, the 911 GT3 Touring was based on the track-focused GT3 only without the large rear wing and a few other tidbits, but it retained the same naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six and six-speed manual transmission combo. Not surprisingly, the 911 GT3 was a huge success because everyone who missed out on a 911 R was given a second chance. But now the question is whether there'll be a 992 911 GT3 Touring? Thanks to Automotive Mike via YouTube, the prototype 911 caught testing at the Nurburgring in this video is the new GT3 Touring. How do we know? It sports the center exhaust setup, a GT3 trademark. We don't see any reason why Porsche would equip any 911, other than a GT3, with a center-mounted exhaust. There's also no massive GT3-style rear wing. Instead, there's the active and fully retractable wing found on the 992 911 Carrera. Porsche Porsche Porsche Underneath this lies, once again, a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six, said to be an evolution of the engine found in the new 718 Cayman GT4 and 718 Spyder where it produces 420 hp. The 992 GT3 is expected to have over 500 hp. A debut is not expected until next year sometime. What will be interesting is whether or not Porsche differentiates the GT3 from the GT3 Touring once again. It could simply offer the GT3 without the rear wing and call it a day.
