The 2017 BMW M4 Is At Its Best When You Pay An Extra $4 750

There was one thing we really wanted but didn't have with our 2017 BMW M4 sampler: the $4,750 Competition Package. Yes, it's a nearly $5k optional extra on top of the already expensive $66,200 base price, but screw it. If you're going to get an M4 you might as well go all out and do it right. That means, in addition to the Competition Package, which was just added to the option list this year, things like the $3,900 Executive Package, $1,700 Driver's Assistance Package, and $1,900 Lighting Package are must-haves. Power, of course, comes courtesy of a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six with 425 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, with power going to the rear wheels through the (also optional) seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Fortunately, you can get a six-speed manual for no extra charge. Nice. But here's why that Competition Package is needed: Power increases to 444 hp and you get that much-desired M Adaptive Suspension. Basically, the M4 becomes a much better performance car. Damn shame that Competition Pack isn't standard across the M4 range. Even without it, the M4 continues to prove itself as one of the best all-around high-performance luxury coupes on the market.
