Infiniti May Finally Get Serious About A Performance Q60 Coupe

As a part on the Renault-Nissan alliance, Infiniti is partnered with the Renault Sport Formula One team. Even though Infiniti has expressed interest in bringing hybrid F1 tech to its road cars, nothing has materialized in a production model. Last year, Infiniti showed off the Q60 Project Black S Concept, which previewed the future of F1 hybrid technology in a road car. Now, Car Advice reports that Infiniti may finally reveal a production version of the Project Black S as a rival for cars like the Audi RS5, BMW M4, and Mercedes C63 AMG. We could see a production-ready version as soon as the Paris Motor Show in October. Unfortunately, the car wouldn't arrive in dealerships until 2020 if it is green lit at all. The Project Black S was set to use a twin-turbo V6 paired with an energy recovery system (ERS). The ERS re-deploys stores energy to provide greater performance. Output was expected to be around 500 horsepower, which is a nice bump over the 400 hp Q60 Red Sport currently on sale. Infiniti claims this would be the first affordable car to use current F1 technology. We hope Infiniti is finally serious about building a true performance model. The company's last attempt at a performance brand isn't exactly well-remembered. The Q60 Project Black S probably will not be the production name, so it could be interesting to see the return of the IPL nameplate. If the car does reach production, it will ditch the Red Sport's often criticized steering-by-wire system in favor of a motor-driven unit. The car will also use extensive carbon fiber to cut weight. RWD and AWD are both potential options, but we'll have to wait for more details from Infiniti. Please Infiniti, don't back down, just build it. Infiniti Infiniti Infiniti Infiniti
