New Honda Fit Spied Testing But Won' t Debut Anytime Soon

Sep. 28, 2018 8:30 AM ET by Jared Rosenholtz Spy Shots / 2 Comments This must be a very early test mule. We're big fans of the Honda Fit bandwagon, dubbing it "the best cheap car on the market." The Fit is a wonderful car because it pairs relatively fun steering and handling with an optional six-speed manual and one of the most versatile interiors at any price. Honda even offers the Fit with advanced safety features like adaptive cruise control, which are typically reserved for more expensive cars. The Fit just received a refresh for 2019, but our spy photographers have just spotted an all-new version out testing. Unfortunately, the fourth generation Fit (also called the Jazz in other markets) isn't expected to arrive until at least 2020, so this is likely a very early prototype as evidenced by the heavy camouflage. This fourth generation model will bring with it a number of improvements, including the return of the all-electric Fit EV model. The new Fit EV is being developed specifically with the Chinese market in mind, so it remains to be seen if it will also be sold in the US this time around. Honda is also reportedly working on a hybrid variant, which would borrow the hybrid system from the Insight. In the Insight, which is a larger vehicle, the hybrid system achieves an excellent 55 mpg rating. Since the Fit's reveal is likely more than a year away, the rest of the details are quite slim. Of course, we will always beg Honda to build a sportier Si or Type R variant of the Fit, but it seems unlikely that it will ever happen. The more likely outcome is that the new Fit arrives as an excellent, if not slightly underpowered, cheap car champion. We'll continue to update you as we learn more details about the upcoming fourth generation Honda Fit.
