2019 Mazda CX-5 Will Finally Get More Powerful Turbocharged Variant

The Mazda CX-5 is one of our favorites mid-size crossovers, but the most powerful engine option (in the US) has always been a 2.5-liter SkyActiv four-cylinder pumping out 187 horsepower. Rumors have pointed towards a turbocharged version of the CX-5, which would likely utilize the engine from the Mazda6 and CX-9 pumping out 250 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Recently, those turbocharged rumors took an odd turn when the EPA posted MPG figures for a diesel-powered CX-5. After speculating that a diesel CX-5 was incoming, we now have new proof that the CX-5 will indeed be getting the 2.5-liter turbocharged gas engine. Mazda A user on Reddit posted what appears to be the highlights sheet for the 2019 CX-5. Reddit user wnightmare187 says "[I] Went to my dealership to purchase a 2018 Mazda 6 GT and sales guy showed me their internal documents for some updated 2019 models. Looks like CX-5 will be getting a big upgrade. Still no news on diesel engine though." The document mentions "expanded powertrain options" including a SkyActiv-G 2.5 T engine with a Dynamic Pressure Turbo. Other updates include additions of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a redesigned gauge cluster, ventilated seats, power-folding mirrors, and improved rear seat comfort. Another interesting tidbit was the mention of something called "G-Vectoring Control Plus." G-Vectoring Control has been around on Mazda vehicles for a little while now, so this just seems like a new updated version which may debut on the CX-5. This system measures throttle and steering inputs to reduce torque and provide grip to wheels that need it. While this document wasn't officially revealed by Mazda, we wouldn't be surprised if everything on it turned out to be accurate. However as it originated from Canada, there may be a few minor differences for the US-market car. At this point, it seems extremely likely that a turbocharged CX-5 is on its way.
