New Ford Mustang GT Upgrade Packs A Punch

May. 02, 2020 2:11 PM ET by Aaron Brzozowski Muscle Cars / Comments An extra 19 peak horsepower is a difference you'll feel. Ten out of ten mental health experts agree: more horsepower is a phenomenally effective cure for boredom. And while no one would fault you for being perfectly happy with the 460 horsepower that came with your 2018+ Ford Mustang GT, if you're looking for just a little bit more oomph, Ford has a solution for you. Appropriately named the "Mustang GT Calibration with Cold Air Kit and Throttle Body," the package includes exactly what its title suggests, boosting peak horsepower output by 19 and adding as much as 42 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm, along with a nice, fat rise in torque throughout the full rpm range. That's definitely enough that you'll be able to feel a difference each time you dig into the throttle.
Ford Ford Ford All those gains are achieved with a couple of simple bolt-on parts: a cold-air induction kit, a big 87-mm throttle body like the one that comes stock on the Shelby GT350 Mustang, a throttle adapter plate, and an engine calibration. Better, since it's all coming straight from Ford, installation doesn't void your factory warranty so long as it's performed by a Ford-certified technician. If there's a downside, it's that you'll have to fill your tank up with 91-octane or higher fuel after the requisite engine calibration. That said, gas prices are still awfully depressed right now due to the global coronavirus pandemic, so... that seems like a problem for tomorrow.
Ford Performance Ford Performance That 479 horsepower you get with this kit on a 2018-or-newer Ford Mustang GT is essentially equivalent to the Bullitt Edition Mustang's factory output rating, and while we do love the Bullitt, not everyone can justify the $10,000 higher starting price or live with a choice of just two exterior colors: Shadow Black, or Highland Green.
The new "Mustang GT Calibration with Cold Air Kit and Throttle Body" is the perfect way to secure that car's extra oomph without having to actually go out and buy one. It has a suggested retail price of $1,275.
