Two More Mystery Rivian Models Are Coming

The Tesla Cybertruck has generated a lot of publicity, but it will face some stiff competition from Rivian. The US startup company was originally planning to put the electric R1T pickup and R1S SUV into production at its Illinois factory later this year, one year before the Cybertruck launches. Unfortunately, Rivian has been forced to postpone its production plans due to the coronavirus pandemic. Rivian hasn't built a single R1T or R1S yet, but we recently reported the startup company is planning to expand its lineup with a rally-inspired electric wagon called the R2R. And now trademark filings discovered by the Rivian Owners Forum suggest the expansion won't end there. Rivian Rivian Trademarks submitted to the European Union Intellectual Property Office discovered by the Rivian Owners Forum have potentially revealed the names of two new Rivian EVs that will join the R1T and R1S. Rivian has registered trademarks for the "R1V" and "R2X" model names. According to the filings, the trademarks cover "land vehicles and parts and fittings therefor, namely, structural parts and powertrain components in the nature of electric motors, gearboxes and axles; motor vehicle bodies". Intriguingly, they also cover "all terrain vehicles (ATVs)" and "bicycles." Imagine if Rivian built an ATV that could fit in the back of the R1T to rival the Tesla Cyberquad that was shown during the Cybertruck reveal. © 2018 Ben Moon Rivian What could these new models be? The R1V is likely the name of Rivian's upcoming electric Amazon delivery van being developed as part of $700 million investment from the e-commerce giant. Underpinning the R1V will be the same "skateboard" platform built for the R1T and R1S. Rivian's electric delivery vans will be available in three different sizes and offered with FWD or AWD depending on the location. Amazon has already ordered 100,000 delivery vans from Rivian, which will take around ten years for the startup company to fulfill. If we're to speculate, Rivian's R2X trademark could be the name of a hardcore electric SUV or crossover that's more off-road focused than the R1S.
