We Have Bad News About BMW' s V12 Engine

If you are searching for the ultimate iteration of the 2020 BMW 7 Series, the V12-powered M760i xDrive variant is the one to get. Powered by a 6.6-liter twin-turbocharged V12, the M760i produces a continent-crushing 600 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque good for a 0-60 mph time of just 3.6 seconds. But even though the M760i has more cylinders than any other 7 Series, it is actually a bit slower than the lighter, V8-powered Alpina B7. That is why it comes as no surprise that BMW is rumored to be eliminating its V12 engines altogether. The rumors of the V12's death seem to be gaining even more traction lately, with Bimmer Today now reporting that the engine could be on its last legs. BMW BMW BMW According to the outlet's sources, the production of the M760i for the European market will end in fall 2020 with no successor planned. BMW could continue to build the V12-powered sedan for the United States market but with global demand dwindling, we doubt it will be around for too much longer. Radical European Union emission regulations make it tough to continue offering a twelve-cylinder engine. And we've already seen rivals like Mercedes offer a limited edition send-off for its V12-powered flagship sedan, the mighty S65 AMG. BMW BMW BMW Aside from the Rolls-Royce Ghost and Phantom and the Bentley Flying Spur, which uses a W12, the M760i could be one of the last ever V12-powered super sedans. This may eventually add to its collectibility, as more luxury automakers begin to pivot away from massive internal combustion engines to electric drivetrains. BMW has already confirmed that the next-generation 7 Series will be available with gasoline and plug-in hybrid drivetrains but the most powerful variant will be all-electric. We expect this all-electric version of the 7 Series to produce well over 600 hp and yield a 0-60 time under 3.6 seconds. It just won't have the pedigree of a V12.
