Iconic AC Cobra Superblower Reborn With 580 HP

Aug. 10, 2020 1:45 PM ET by Martin Bigg Sports Cars / 1 Comment The electric AC Cobra has also started production. Last month, AC Cars announced the iconic AC Cobra is going electric. Revealed as part of the 2020 AC Cobra range, the Series 1 electric replaces the Cobra's Ford-sourced V8 engine with an electric motor producing 308 horsepower, while a 54 kWh battery enables the electric sports car to deliver a range of around 150 miles. Since the reveal, the new electric AC Cobra has already started production.
Joining it is the combustion-powered AC Cobra 140 Charter Edition packing the same 2.3-liter turbo four-cylinder EcoBoost engine as the Ford Mustang producing 350 hp. Now, AC Cars has announced its third new model will be a recreation of the iconic AC Cobra 378 Superblower Mk IV, which originally launched in 1998. 22 years later, the Superblower is finally making a comeback. AC Cars AC Cars Like the original AC Cobras, the new Superblower uses a ladder frame chassis. It also features a limited-slip differential, front and rear multi-link suspension with coilover shock absorbers, front and rear anti-roll bars, and ventilated disc brakes. Power is sourced from a General Motors 6.2 liter supercharged V8 engine that produces 580 hp, which is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. For comparison, the original Superblower's Ford-sourced V8 produced around 355 hp, so the new version should offer improved performance. AC Cars hasn't listed any performance specifications as yet. As standard, the new AC Cobra Superblower rides on 16-inch wheels. "The development of the AC Cobra 378 Superblower Mk IV is an important continuation of this sought after range for us, after we developed the original version in 1998," said Alan Lubinsky, owner of AC Cars. AC Cars has confirmed the first production example of the Superblower is currently being built and more customer cars will be available to order. Pricing for the AC Cobra Superblower starts at £129,500 ($169,000) in the UK, where the car will be sold exclusively at AC Cobra's official Boss Motor Company dealer in London. AC Cars hasn't announced if it plans to sell the reborn Superblower in the US. AC Cars AC Cars AC Cars
