The 90 best shows on Peacock right now October 2022

By Christine Persaud and Blair Marnell October 4, 2022 Share Prepare to feel chills up and down your spine this week if you decide to check out A Friend of the Family, the gripping new drama miniseries starring Emmy-nominated Jack Lacey (The White Lotus). Based on the true story of the Broberg family, it’s a retelling that has been done before through series like Netflix’s Abducted in Plain Sight. But Lacy’s performance as the troubled Robert Berchtold adds another dimension of evil. Also this month, several other shows return for new seasons, including One of Us is Lying, New Amsterdam, The Amber Ruffin Show, and, of course, the long-running sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live. There’s plenty to check out among the best shows on Peacock right now and lots of reasons to sign up if you have been on the fence about doing so. Can’t find anything you like on Peacock? Lucky for you, we’ve also curated guides to the best shows on Netflix, the best shows on Hulu, and the best shows on Amazon Prime Video. Based on true events, Robert Berchtold (Lacy) kidnaps a child, Jan Broberg (Grace), several times over a number of years. He’s a close friend of the family, and the Brobergs’ faith and sense of community create blinders to Berchtold’s true motivations and psychopathic tendencies. As Berchtold digs deeper and deeper into the fabric of the family, even trying to turn the young girl against them, father Bob (Hanks) finds it increasingly difficult to ignore the truth masked behind the charm. A Friend of the Family is a chilling, gripping drama that will be pleasing to any fan of the true-crime genre. The limited series premieres on October 6. James J Bulger, features six episodes. Teams of documentarians travel throughout the U.S., visiting subjects who have rejected the reporting of mainstream media, with much of the content focused on those who aided the January 6 riots, anti-vaccine advocates who have spoken out against the COVID-19 vaccine, and various conspiracy theories. What drives people to believe what they do, what are the dangers of conspiracy thinking, and how has this contributed to tearing apart society? New Amsterdam is a heart-wrenching, comedic, sometimes all-too-real portrayal of the medical profession that takes not-so-subtle jabs at societal injustices in every episode. It might be a story about a sick patient who can’t afford treatment, a teenager dealing with mental illness and isolation during the global pandemic, or even the existence of racism in the hospital. It’s fiction with a hint of truth tossed in for good measure as medical director Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) tries desperately to save the world and help everyone he can, even if his completely unorthodox ideas raise eyebrows. The fast-paced show tugs at the heartstrings and marks a welcome departure from the typical formulaic hospital drama. Built around the premise that a present-day Johnson is running for president and being interviewed, he recalls pivotal, sometimes unbelievable moments in his life that he somehow tie to his relatability to average Americans. Young Rock flips among three different times — when he was a young boy, a teenager, and in college — and features real stories from the actor’s life, albeit sometimes told out of order. The actors playing younger versions of Johnson are superb, as is the supporting cast of characters, including Johnson’s parents (one playing wrestler Rocky Johnson), grandmother, and other famous wrestlers from that era such as Andre the Giant, The Iron Sheik, and “Macho Man” Randy Savage.
