Meet the man challenging Sofia Vergara over their frozen embryos

Katie GrantMay 01, 2015 How do you like your eggs in the morning? Unfertilised, if you’re Sofia Vergara – though it’s a little late now. The US television star has come under fire from her former fiancé, Nick Loeb, for insisting two embryos they created in 2013 remain frozen indefinitely. He’s desperate to be a dad? Loeb has penned an open letter, published in The New York Times, detailing his relationship with the actress and his desire for children. That doesn’t sound like the best way of getting her on-side… It didn’t stop Loeb saying he yearned “for the type of family based on the images one might see in a Norman Rockwell painting”. But they’re not even together any more. They split in 2014, reportedly over disagreements regarding parenthood. Colombian-born Vergara, who has a teenage son from a previous relationship, is now engaged to the actor Joe Manganiello. It’s getting less Norman Rockwell and more Edvard Munch’s The Scream… It certainly doesn’t paint the nicest picture. What’s the legal situation? Vergara and Loeb signed a contract that the embryos could only be used with both parties’ consent. Loeb is trying to have the contract voided, as it did not specify what would happen if the couple separated. “In my view, keeping [the embryos] frozen forever is tantamount to killing them,” he said. What does Vergara have to say? Her attorney said: “Vergara…is content to leave the embryos frozen indefinitely as she has no desire to have children with her ex, which should be understandable given the circumstances.” More: For some unfathomable reason, Jaÿ-Z is spelling his name with an umlautKeep reading...Show less
