Girls star Jemima Kirke talks about her abortion

Girls star and mother-of-two Jemima Kirke wants to help change that, and has recorded a video for America's Centre for Reproductive Rights (CRR) where she talks about having a termination. In 2007 I became pregnant by my boyfriend at the time. I wasn't sure that I wanted to be attached to this person for the rest of my life. My life was just not conducive to raising a healthy, happy child. I just didn't feel it was fair. So I decided to get an abortion. Kirke paid for the termination herself as she felt unable to tell her family about the pregnancy. Because she was a 21-year-old student at the time, Kirke had to forgo anaesthesia to afford the procedure - something she describes as one of the many “obstacles” women face to use reproductive services. I still see that today, I still see shame and embarrassment around terminating pregnancies and getting pregnant so I have always been open about my stories, always shared them, especially with other women. Kirke's video is part of the CRR's campaign to get more women to discuss abortion, Draw the Line.
