Jon Stewart is speechless about Eric Garner
Matthew ChampionDec 04, 2014 It's not often that Jon Stewart doesn't know what to say, the most memorable time being when he interviewed Malala Yousafzai. But the host of The Daily Show has been left speechless by the announcement that a New York grand jury will not indict a white police officer over the death of a black man, Eric Garner, he placed in an outlawed chokehold. "I don't know," he said in Wednesday's episode, speaking hours after the decision was made public. "I honestly don't know what to say. If comedy is tragedy plus time, I need more f-ing time. But I would really settle for less f-ing tragedy." Many people in the US are still reeling from the decision of a Missouri grand jury not to charge police officer Darren Wilson over the fatal shooting of black teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson. Stewart acknowledged the ambiguities of the Ferguson case, where conflicting forensic evidence, varying witness testimonies and the argument of police self-defence were at play. But none of these exist in the Garner case, he said. The coroner called it a homicide, the guy is not acting threatening, and we know that, not through witness testimony, unreliable bystanders, but because we are f-ing watching it - someone taped it.
