Scotland is about to have a pro-independence daily tabloid
Francesca WashtellNov 21, 2014 From next Monday Scotland will have its first explicitly pro-independence daily newspaper when the National launches. According to Media Guardian, the 32-page daily tabloid will be available for 50p and will have a pilot print run of 50,000. The National's banner will read: "The newspaper that supports an independent Scotland." It will be published by the Newsquest-owned Herald and Times group and will be edited by Richard Walker, who also edits the Sunday Herald, the only newspaper in Scotland to come out in favour of independence during the referendum campaign, fervently backing 'Yes'. The September referendum was won by the Better Together campaign with 'No' gaining 55.3 per cent of the vote, compared to the 'Yes' campaign's 44.7 per cent. According to the Guardian, a source "with knowledge of the launch" said the title sounded "very i-like", a reference to the i paper, launched as a sister publication to the Independent in 2011. In a letter seen by the Guardian, Malcolm MacDonald, head of circulation at Herald and Times group, said: "The pilot launch of the National is a response to reader requests for a daily title which supports independence." Newsquest was not immediately available for comment.
