That North Korean viral video you' ve been sharing It' s basically propaganda

Dina RickmanAug 15, 2014 This glossy timelapse viral video was produced in conjunction with North Korean travel agency Koryo Tours and has been shared on Twitter more than 5,000 times. But Amnesty International has condemned it as “propaganda” for the totalitarian country. Speaking to i100, Tim Hancock, Director of Policy at Amnesty UK, said the video put a "‘travel industry’ spin on a country with the most appalling human rights record." People must look beyond the propaganda. North Korea is a country in a league of its own. There’s no nod here to the country’s brutal punishment system of prison camps, where innocent people face starvation, forced labour, misery and death. Marvel at the aesthetics by all means, but then watch people talking about their life in the camps, where thousands upon thousands of people are still rotting away. As for the makers of the video? They say in a blurb under the footage: "Enter Pyongyang is an observational film. At no point did Koryo Tours or we have to pretend to be supporters of the DPRK Government or their philosophy in order to be granted permission to shoot this film. Amazingly, we were given complete editorial control in the making of this piece."
