Woman Avoids Paying For Stuff By Saying She’ s Broke When She Earns A Good Salary Divides The Internet

Justinas Keturka and

A very large portion of the American population is living paycheck to paycheck. But as the pandemic hit, the percentage of people's income remaining each month after taxes and spending skyrocketed to a record 32.2% in April, up from 12.7% in March, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. The economy slowed down as consumer spending fell to 12.6%. And as these unprecedented times made our saving habits evolve, more and more people have now gone into frugal mode. Just like the author of this recent r/AITA post who wanted to find out whether it's wrong of her to pretend she's broke. "I am doing an engineering job making a good amount of money and I save a lot so I'm definitely not actually broke," she stated. Turns out that she sometimes acts like she is, which totally frustrates her boyfriend.

The woman has been pretending to be broke so she doesn t have to spend money on things she doesn t want to but her boyfriend finds this behavior super annoying

He has a stated boundary that she is crossing against his will. It's okay to be uncomfortable being forced to either do something you don't want to do, or support your partner. 5 5points reply Anna Banana Anna Banana Community Member • points posts comments upvotes 1 year ago The fact that he's embarrassed before his friends is to me the red flag. What if she really were broke? Would that embarrass him? It just doesn't sit right with me. 6 6points reply SoozeeQ SoozeeQ Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago (edited) I think this may be a miscommunication here. Obviously, the boyfriend and other guests knew it was to promote the new business venture. (She states that's why they were invited). He may not have passed that bit onto her, though, and just said "it's a party". In her mind, that's food and drinks and a chat. He may have felt embarrassed because she obviously didn't want "in", but the other guests couldn't understand that, because they were all there to "get in". I was once invited to a friend's Tupperware party many years ago, under the proviso, "please come, my other friend is just starting out, and needs the practice to run a party. Absolutely no obligation to purchase". So I went along. If that disclaimer wasn't there, I probably would have refused as I already had Tupperware and didn't need anymore. (That stuff is expensive!) 1 1point reply SoozeeQ SoozeeQ Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago (edited) Also, another time, whilst on holiday in Fiji, we were invited to "spend $20 and go on an island tour, small cruise and lunch included". The catch was, we had to spend 90 minutes listening to their spiel. We knew it was Timeshare, but they kept denying it. So, we sat through it, and toured their "Timeshare" properties, which were gorgeous, but we just didn't have the money to sign up for million dollar beachside views. So, we stuck to our guns and refused to sign, and they had to honour their agreement and give us the tour and lunch, because we'd paid the $20. Being upfront was the key. 1 1point reply rabbitsrabbit rabbitsrabbit Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago Its fine to state what makes you uncomfortable and that you don't want to be a part of it i.e. remove yourself from the situation but in this case, he is asking her to change - 'drop the broke act' 'stop lying' etc when it is a relatively harmless behaviour (ie she isnt taking advantage of anyone). And his resistance is not so much from a moral standpoint it seems but more because he saw it as 'embarrassing' - does he look down on the poor? Think she is being cheap? He knows she wasn't comfortable at the MLM party so why didnt he deflect/pull away his friend's continuous selling advances if he didnt want her to have to put on 'the act'? Instead he pulled her out to get her to 'change'. Clearly, maintaining 'face' with his friends are more important. 4 4points reply Grumble O'Pug Grumble O'Pug Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago She’s not. Your boyfriend either needs to stand up with you and say something to the people pushing you to purchase something or just shut up and deal with your excuses. It would be better if you could say a firm, confident NO, but I know even that doesn't make people listen. As long as you aren't using it as an excuse to take advantage of someone then I don't see the huge issue. Unless your a compulsive liar. 35 35points reply Anna Banana Anna Banana Community Member • points posts comments upvotes 1 year ago Agreed, she doesn't owe those sellers anything and when the first 'no' doesn't make an impression, why not just lie to get it over with?
