Even linguists, writers, and literary critics whose main object in their work is words and language didn't memorize whole dictionaries. There are words that you would expect others to know, because they are just common sense knowledge. I've never had a problem deciphering English and I've got zero Greek and Latin. And when I studied linguistics, no one ever said there was a "need [...] to learn Greek and Latin word forms [to help with] deciphering unfamiliar words." (Of course learning *about* Greek and Latin and its influence on English is part and parcel, but not actually learning the word forms to help comprehension of English). 0 0points reply fuggnuggins fuggnuggins Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago (edited) If you've got a good vocabulary and sense of spellings, and especially if you've looked at etymology and spent some time with thesaurus and definitely dictionary, you've probably got a good intuitive understanding and might be able to grasp some related languages pretty well. There's a few channels on Youtube that do these "Can an Old English speaker and Old Norse speaker communicate" and "Which language better understands Danish" videos. You might be surprised how close you can intuitively understand just from a kind of subconscious recognition of certain sounds and patterns. I have no real familiarity with any pure language of Europe apart from English, but lanuages like Danish (which is a kind of weird language) and German, very basic sentences I can understand pretty bloody close or spot on like maybe 60% of the time, and don't really understand at all like maybe 10% of the time. The only language I've ever attempted to study apart from English is Korean, and that's almost completely different (actually has no known related languages). 0 0points reply fuggnuggins fuggnuggins Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago (edited) English is like maybe 50% Greek and Latin. What do you mean you've got none? You speak bits of English, Latin, French, Germanic, Norse, Greek and Indo-European primarily, with some Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Eastern European and Russian, and bits and pieces from here and there. Any English speaker is vaguely polylingual by default. 0 0points reply Load More Comments POST J. F. J. F. Like, you had logic classes? You revised for an end of year exam in logic? 0 0points reply Q B F T Q B F T Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago Really? F. J. F.
