In Japan, before the advent of Westerners who told them otherwise, sex was just sex and gender didn't matter. A man was just as apt to have sex with another man as he was with a woman. In fact, Samurai soldiers often had sex with one another because their wives couldn't be trusted: Samurai often wed the widows of the men they had killed in battle. In those days, the women were trained to wield a sword and would sometimes kill their new husbands in revenge. For this reason, the Samurai often slept with their swords by their sides. Interesting times, to say the least. 1 1point reply Burs Burs Community Member • points posts comments upvotes 1 year ago I agree. I personally believe that sexuality is a spectrum where your preferences might change depending of your culture or the moment of your life. It is the only explanation as to why in some classical cultures (like you said with Japan) being bisexual was extremely common while in later cultures being heterosexual is the norm. 2 2points reply PeachPossum PeachPossum Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago You are likely right. Among ancient Greek and Roman emperors kept young men on the side just for fun. They thought nothing of it. Sexuality is a spectrum. The divisions began in the 19th century, though the taboos preexisted. The term homosexual was first used in 1868. Asexual followed in 1896 or thereabouts. The term heterosexual was introduced in the late 19th century, but the term had a different meaning than it does today: heterosexual described someone with an abnormal or perverted appetite for the opposite sex. By the 1930s, the usage had toned down to the meaning we have today. Likewise, bisexual had a different meaning in 1793: possessing traits of both sexes. By 1892, the term had shifted to mean attraction to both sexes. It's no coincidence that the late 19th and early 20th centuries were also the rise of psychoanalysis as a profession. 1 1point reply Axolotl King Axolotl King Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago I wish everyone could just love who they wanna love and be who they wanna be. "The most popular theme across this subreddit is the lack of self-awareness when it comes to certain couples and their toxic relationships," the mod said. "It's like that one guy at work who comes in every day complaining about his wife and you constantly ask yourself 'Why are they even still married?!'" The mod thinks the community of the subreddit is really great. "We have a bunch of genuine users who share a lot of personal moments as well as laughs and friendly jokes. We do get trolls, and they sometimes are subtle, but for the most part, we really like the community that posts here," they explained. #3Props To The Kid Who Filled It Out

Bwuahahaha :)))) 68 68points reply View more comments Some critics of this subreddit can be heard saying it is simply putting labels on people and pitting them against each other which only widens the gap between the LGBTQ+ and straight cisgender folks but the mod of r/AreTheStraightsOK believes they misunderstand what this subreddit is actually about. "First and foremost, it was created by a straight cis woman, and second, it includes straight people (both cis and trans) within the mod team and the community. Critics seem to be missing the information that's provided right in the sidebar on how this subreddit is not aimed at straight people in particular - it's aimed at bad relationships and sometimes sexist/LGBT+phobic people. Now, if critics fell into one of those areas themselves, I could at least understand why they think it's widening some sort of 'gap.'" #5I Am Yet To Invade Poland
