People become vegetarians for many reasons. Some adopt this diet trying to be healthier or to avoid hormones used in animal foods while others do it for animal rights or environmental concerns. It's everyone's choice. So when Redditor u/temptemptemp772's 15-year-old son told him and his wife that he's making the shift, the dad was understanding; the family made quite a few changes to their everyday life to help the boy get by. What u/temptemptemp772 couldn't get behind, though, was his son sabotaging all the meat supply in the house - on a hot summer's day, the 15-year-old went rogue and secretly unplugged the fridge that held the family's livelihood during their financial hardship. The dad was furious. He punished the boy and made him clean up the rotting meat. However, this got him called an a**hole in return. And the word got to u/temptemptemp772's head: 'Was it too much?' he kept wondering. To put these doubts to rest, the dad told the entire story on Reddit and asked other users whether or not he was being a jerk. Image credits: nyatiman (not the actual photo) Image credits: temptemptemp772 In our earlier article on misbehaving kids, writer, director, broadcaster, and founder of the parenting blog Honest Mum, Vicki Broadbent told Bored Panda that "discipline and doing as you say, embodying your values as a parent, teach children important life skills such as self-control, self-love, empathy, resilience, motivation, and working hard." Broadbent believes the 'punishment' should always fit the 'crime' but is against physical discipline, though. So are the academics. According to research, raising your kids with violence and harsh words only harms them and doesn't work at all. The American Academy of Pediatrics (APP) advises that parents and caregivers should not spank or hit children. Instead of teaching responsibility and self-control, spanking actually does the opposite: it often increases aggression and anger in children. A study of children born in 20 medium to large U.S. cities discovered that families who used physical punishment got caught in a negative cycle: the more children were spanked, the more they misbehaved later, which prompted more spankings in response. Spanking's effects may also be felt beyond the parent-child relationship - it sends the message that causing someone pain is OK if you're frustrated. Even with those you love. Parents who yell at children and use words to cause them emotional pain or shame are also in the wrong. Harsh verbal discipline, even by moms and dads who are otherwise warm and loving, can lead to serious issues. Research shows that harsh verbal discipline, which becomes more common as children get older, may lead to more behavior problems and symptoms of depression in teens When it comes to disciplining your child, Vicki thinks the most important thing is to put yourself in their shoes and try to be as understanding as possible. "Children are learning and growing and they can only learn from their mistakes. Try to educate and not berate," she said.

That kid did the wrong thing and has to deal with the consequences for his actions. He has now completely wasted the animal making its death completely pointless. He has shown lack of respect for his parents choices to eat meat and has impacted them financially. I think that consequence was perfect for the boys actions. 44 44points reply Load More Comments POST Otter Otter Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago Vegetarian here: The punishment is appropriate. Kid tried to force other people to becom involuntary vegetarians, and that's not how it works. You have to let other people make up their own minds and choose their own path, in every aspect of life. You can't force anyone to change, not even for the better, and he's old enough to learn that. 130 130points reply Leo Domitrix Leo Domitrix Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago Beat me to it. I'm a vegetarian since I was a toddler (I don't know why I went that way, I just decided enough was enough before I was school age, and no regrets). But I would NEVER waste food. It's their choice, not mine. Jsut like they shouldn't shove meat down my throat. 50 50points reply Load More Replies... Otter Otter Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago I ate meat until I was middle-aged, and had vegetarian friends who never, in all the years I knew them, criticized my choices. When I went veggie, I knew how to behave! As for this kid, I'd praise him to the skies if he actually saved some animals, but well. The end result of this is that the poor animals died for nothing. 11 11points reply Bunzilla Bunzilla Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago Also a vegetarian and have been since I was very young (basically, once I understood that meat was the flesh of a once-living creature, no shade to those who eat meat!), and I completely agree. This actually totally appalls me, because as others have said, spoiling that meat was not only making those deer's' deaths in vain, which flies in the face of what 'going meatless' is about, but it's also a big financial blow to his family. That kid totally deserves to have to clean out that freezer. No sympathy for him. 9 9points reply Karen Lawyer Karen Lawyer Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago Did you have any problems with learning to talk when you were young? I was told there is a correlation between having a speech issues and food texture, particularly meat, when young. (Apparently I had trouble pronouncing the letter L. ) 1 1point reply Leo Domitrix Leo Domitrix Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago @Karen, no. My problem talking was being beaten up if I did. I just hated the taste, and the fact that, growing up on a farm, I saw the dirty side of animals, and it didn't inspire me to eat them. 7 7points reply Bunzilla Bunzilla Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago YES! I had a lot of trouble with 'combination' letters, like TH, SH, etc. My TH problems especially lasted until 6th grade. I have a lot of issues with food texture still, so that's really interesting to hear about. 4 4points reply Nathan Jones Nathan Jones Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago This comment is hidden. In certain situations, shoving meat down your throat wouldn't have anything to do with your diet lol -9 -9points reply Rose the Cook Rose the Cook Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago The boy's unforgivable waste of food did no good for the already dead deer and did nothing to further the vegetarian cause. You can't covert people to any cause by force he deserves any punishment imposed by his parents. 83 83points reply cassiushumanmother cassiushumanmother Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago I agree, i'm not vegetarian and i eat all parts of animals and never waste meat out of respect for the poor dead animal, that was so wrong to deliberately spoil it. I even eat rabbit or horse if i have to and they are my pets, but i don't want my share in the trashbin and the animal dead for nothing so i eat it. What kind of human is he? Hope this punishment would cure him from his selfishness and that he would really respect animals after that. 18 18points reply Load More Replies...
