Well, fiction is not only there for escapism; many writers/filmmakers want spectators to be wiser and adapt lessons characters learned to real life. They convincingly use words, directing, cinematography and music to portray emotions. Of course, not every film has a profound lesson in it. Some are pure entertainment or teach bad lessons. And that's ok. Anime and gaming fan Micu was thinking about what an "awful message" the musical Grease delivers and asked Reddit "What's a movie that teaches a really bad lesson?" She received over 6k responses. Rom-coms and action movies got a lot of smack in the thread. Scroll down for the best ones, and an interview with Micu. It's important to note that female characters in these films were independent and still chose to come back to their husbands, even though these screwball comedies show marriage as a miserable situation. #15 Revenge of the Nerds can’t even claim it’s satirical. The nerds are just as bad - if not worse - than the jocks. Yes the jocks started it by running a few pigs through their party. What the nerds do is far worse but really only at the expense of the easier targets - their women.
Other than the humility of losing in what is effectively a few competitions they cheat at (along with some Tigers Balm in their jockstraps), the Lambdas don’t really get revenge on the jocks, they take it out on their women.
First they spy on them in the nude. Then they distribute the nude photos to the school. Finally Lewis r*^es Betty Childs. All because like four girlfriends helped the jocks with the pigs?
And the idea that it’s okay because Lewis is good in bed is beyond disturbing. She doesn’t just accept it, she decides she’s “in love with a nerd.” That movie was written by some serious incels. It's entertainment, not documentary. We shouldn't expect a work of fiction to teach us anything. If it does teach something good, besides being entertaining, that's wonderful, but not every film is there to teach anything. So many nice films have been ruined by this approach because people taught it "was teaching a bad lesson", while really, no, the film was just supposed to make you reflect upon what you just saw, possibly making you create your own new thoughts. And, before you school me on how sensitive is the youth, I was always taught that fiction is no reality and thus need not be emulated in real life. Heck, there are things that are funny BECAUSE you wouldn't do them in real life. 22 22points reply Daria B Daria B Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago (edited) So, yes, please, change the cliché tropes, but let's not get all self-righteous about it. Nobody criticises Top Gun for making pilots think that pulling both throttles backwards will make the aircraft accelerate, or in a later scene that pushing both throttles forwards will not only make it slow down but also deploy the speed brakes. Nobody criticises Predator for making soldier think that an M134 minigun can be carried around with a backpack, inspite of needing a regulated 24v DC power supply and more electronics than an Apple store just to switch it on, weighing about 40kg dry, and going through about 4 kg of ammunition per *second*. However sometimes no matter how we try to prepare, things will rub off on us simply by hearing the same message over and over. I think the media is somewhat responsible for using certain tropes less. (You might feel the same?) For example, I know I do not need to look perfect. But even knowing this fact hasn't entirely protected me from the brain-washing. Despite all evidence and knowledge that I am ok, I still feel like I do not measure up to standards. 3 3points reply Daria B Daria B Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago Absolutely. The tropes themselves aren't an inherently bad thing. It's the repetitive nature of it, which creates a cliché, that sometimes can be funny, but obviously, we're mostly tired of these things and are demanding a twist. 1 1point reply Random Anon Random Anon Community Member • points posts comments upvotes 1 year ago Yup, I see movies as entertainment. No, The Little Mermaid is full of great messages. 0 0points reply Daria B Daria B Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago (edited) I might get schooled and downvoted for this, but - no, I'm not going to defend any of these films, I dislike most of these tropes just as much as everyone else - I just think we should change our approach to how we see the entertainment industry. However, high school movie that doesn't show them doing homework? Criminal offence. Nanny using her umbrella to fly? All good. Teaching people it's perfectly safe to be in the path of a high powered laser as long as you've got another laser to deflect it with? 30 Movies That Teach Terrible Lessons As Pointed Out By People In This Online Group Interview
128Kviews Gabija JanCommunity member Publish Not your original work? Add source Remember watching something in a movie you wanted to repeat?
That's concealment really...
A .22 will go through a car door or a couch.
A car isn't even cover like in Jon Wick or anything. Rifle rounds will zip right through unless it's a solid engine block hit. To me, it's when needs in a relationship aren't met for a prolonged period of time, or when people lose themselves in the flow of a relationship that they actually feel trapped in, people can make bad decisions, for which they ultimately can be forgiven for, if the appropriate effort is done. Geoffers Geoffers Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago @Daria B came here to say the same thing, but you phrased it better than I could. However, high school movie that doesn't show them doing homework? Criminal offence. Nanny using her umbrella to fly? All good. Teaching people it's perfectly safe to be in the path of a high powered laser as long as you've got another laser to deflect it with? Not a problem. 4 4points reply Elli Melli Elli Melli Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago Well, relationship skills are for everyone, unlike flying an aircraft or using war equipment. 0 0points reply pusheen buttercup pusheen buttercup Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago I think your side and the other side both have good points. :) We shouldn't view entertainment all the time as an "example of how the world is." However sometimes no matter how we try to prepare, things will rub off on us simply by hearing the same message over and over.
