Publish Not your original work? Add source When it comes to the big cities, thousands of private conversations are happening on the streets every single day. While many say that listening in on these dialogues is a nosy thing to do, sometimes you just can't help it. Especially when you hear something bizarre and entirely out of context. This Instagram account is dedicated to some of the most hilarious chit-chats taking place in the Windy City. More than 148K Chicagoans do not mess around, eavesdropping and unapologetically discussing the good, the bad and the ridiculous things happening around them. Bored Panda has collected the best conversations from this account, so continue scrolling and upvote your favorite ones! And after you're done, be sure to check out our previous posts on numerous Overheard spinoffs including some spicy whispers from LA, New York and San Francisco. Though of course Stephen Miller is the exception that proves the rule. 32 32points reply View More Replies... View more comments This Instagram account is dedicated to all things Chicago and is connecting people through their shared location and experiences. Whether we're talking about dating, sports, weather or the pandemic behavior, the creators are trying to fully capture the unique and ridiculous humor of Chi-Town inhabitants. If you've ever walked around this large city talking about your private affairs, there's a big chance someone got curious enough to stop and listen. But where does this urge of peeking into other people's lives come from? Well, it seems that observing others is not only compelling and entertaining, but also primal. #2 overheard_in_chicago Report Final score: 106points POST James James Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 9 months ago One's immoral and one is illegal. 36 36points reply View More Replies... View more comments John Locke, a professor of language science and author of Eavesdropping: An Intimate History, spoke to Quartz about how this habit of listening to others was first characterized, and how we can actually benefit from our nosiness. He gave a compelling argument defending this human behavior and started with mentioning that it evolved over time. "Monkeys generally are very watchful and not just by eye, but by ear," the professor explained. "We can assume that the very earliest humans, or proto-humans, were like that as well. … We have regions in the brain, mechanisms in the brain that are designed to draw inferences from partial information that we see and hear and smell." Being extremely aware of what's going on helped humans stay vigilant and protect the things they possess. #3 overheard_in_chicago Report Final score: 101points POST Mad Dragon Mad Dragon Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 9 months ago I assume other person means “I love you, too.” If they respond with, “I couldn’t make you do that. View more comments It's interesting that when someone is talking quietly, it grabs people's attention. However, when they are being loud, others start to feel annoyed and wish they could cover their ears. The reason behind it is that noisy social behavior violates one basic law of nature: "We don't like donations. We don't like it when people present us with information about themselves that we're not seeking." "[People] want to know what you're truly like inside, not what others want them to think," Locke said. "We love it when we get something that's truly genuinely true about others and so we still prefer taking it, or if not taking it, extracting clues on our own." #5 overheard_in_chicago Report Final score: 87points POST Dorothy Parker Dorothy Parker Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 9 months ago My part of Los Angeles too. View more comments There certainly are some psychological effects eavesdropping has on humans, because every single one of us has surrendered to our nosiness at one point or another. "It's pretty clear that one of the things that stands as a threat to us, even in modern society, is the presence of a stranger. We simply don't know what they're like or what their intentions might be." It's hard to tell what a person truly is like just from their appearance. Still, our eyes, ears and nose help us in sniffing out if they're a friend, or a foe. It's only natural that we would have some kind of instrument in our brain that would help us in determining if the stranger poses us any danger. "We're quite good at reading those displays, or those sensitive cues, that people give off. There are mechanisms in the brain that are specialized for that purpose," the professor explained. #7 overheard_in_chicago Report Final score: 82points POST Paulina Paulina Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 9 months ago We hear you, girl - signed every person over 30. 20 20points reply View more comments #8 overheard_in_chicago Report Final score: 78points POST Kristen Lee Parker Kristen Lee Parker Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 9 months ago ? 6 6points reply View more comments According to Locke, there are no real negative consequences of eavesdropping. When we're out in public, we need to know how to behave, so naturally, we turn to other people. We look around, see how they are dressed, how they talk, and observe their behavior in general, "and there's nothing eavesdrop-y about that". #9 overheard_in_chicago Report Final score: 77points POST Cactus 1549 Cactus 1549 Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 9 months ago That also works with 121 and 114 (Texas state highways) just north of DFW airport 7 7points reply View More Replies... But I know a couple who are married with 2 kids (been together 10 years) and they are super petty with money and make each other pay for gas (if they take each other's cars) or food for the babies. And I know for the fact that they are not okay. 19 19points reply View More Replies... View more comments We are also very intrigued by how other people behave in private. We spend most of our lives alone with our thoughts, and it's interesting to see how others act when they think no one is observing them. "The only way you can know that is by looking at other people who think that they're alone," John Locke mentioned. #12 overheard_in_chicago Report Final score: 61points POST Julie Harden Julie Harden Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 9 months ago Lol! 12 12points reply View more comments #13 overheard_in_chicago Report Final score: 60points POST europaleta europaleta Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 9 months ago Damn, I would! The hospital I used to work in has a Starbucks in the lobby. It is open 24/7 and is lifeline for staff and family. They do help people, people exhausted and under stress and maybe not at their best. Maybe the benefit of the doubt is possible here? 16 16points reply View More Replies... View more comments In a previous interview, Dr. Lauren Emberson, a psychology professor at the University of British Columbia, told Bored Panda that we find such private interactions entertaining simply because we don't know the whole story. "These convos were very irritating at a time before texting when everyone was talking on their cell phones and it was very noisy with those conversations in public spaces like buses," she explained. "Now most people text (myself included) so they might be more of a curiosity than anything else. My personal opinion is that they are funny because they are out of context and that engages your curiosity in a way." #15 overheard_in_chicago Report Final score: 54points POST Nikki Sevven Nikki Sevven Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 9 months ago *New England has entered the chat* 18 18points reply View More Replies...
