14 Of My Favorite Opal Specimens From My Collection

Community member Publish Not your original work? Add source About 3 years ago I started a rock collection! After getting my first rough opal specimen, I have been on a mission to collect *at least one* opal from every locality. It's been a daunting task and I'm certainly not done, but I feel like I'm getting close! So far I have opal specimens from: Mexico, Nevada, Louisiana, Australia, Indonesia, Ethiopa, California, Honduras, Idaho and Oregon. I have acquired many varieties that are mined in different areas within those areas. I don't know if I'll ever be able to complete my goal...but it's fun trying! I'm going to share 14 of my favorite specimens from my collection; I have well over 200 individual opal specimens. This post may include affiliate links. #1

Most people who own opals do not realize that you should store your opals in plain water. NOT milk or anything like that. Opals dry out and lose their "color" and become very brittle. They ship uncut opals in water. I store all my opals, including the ring my husband gave me, in water. 1 1point reply ItzLog (Post author) ItzLog Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 2 weeks ago So if you get an opal that's already dried out and it's full of color and opal "fire", it's more than likely considered to be "stable" and putting it in water to store it could possibly make it "unstable" (dependent on what type of opal it is) 1 1point reply Load More Replies... ItzLog (Post author) ItzLog Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 2 weeks ago Not ALL opals should be stored in water, only non-hydrophane opals are "safe" to be stored that way. Hydrophane opals can readily absorb significant amounts of water and also have the ability to dry it out, BUT there is a chance that they may become cloudy or transparent and lose their opal "fire" permanently. The Ethiopian Opals I've posted here are all NON-HYDROPHANE opals and these ones in particular MUST stay in water, as the conditions they were mined in were wet. Drying them out would likely cause them to crack or craze. Australian opal is also considered non-hydrophane but it will not be altered if submerged in water. You *can* put it in water if you want to (it won't absorb it), but it's unnecessary to do so. I'd be very suspicious of any opal vendor that sold jewelry-grade opal that was submerged in water. You have no clue if it is going to crack or be cloudy when dried out. 1 1point reply lara lara Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 2 weeks ago My information comes from someone who mines and sells opals in Australia.
