Expeditions Rome & Death and Glory DLC Review A Historical CRPG
Posted By: Jeremy G.on: May 16, 2022In: Game Reviews, Gaming, PC, Reviews, SteamTags: Expeditions Rome, THQNordicNo Comments Print Email Released in January, the Logic Artists game Expeditions: Rome is now back with its latest addition, Death and Glory, a new piece of downloadable content (DLC). Logic Artists, known for their Expeditions franchise, are their first DLC release. So, with the latest content release, we decided to try the whole game and DLC. So, how is the Logic Artist game? Find out in our review of Expeditions: Rome & Death and Glory DLC. Story A deep historically inspired tale of political intrigue
The player will fall into the shoes of a young Roman, forced to flee after a dangerous plot that leads to your father’s death and threatens the rest of your family. You now find yourself thrust into the role of the Legatus, a high-ranking position in the Roman army. Taking refuge in the military, you’ll begin your adventure tasked will quelling a Greek rebellion. There’s so much to say about the story in Expeditions: Rome. The player will experience a grand narrative through the inspiration of history and contact historical figures. Following the Roman campaigns, this tale will take players across the Mediterranean, Africa, and Europe. The player will make decisions and actions that will further create ripples into the game, where the player is now creating their version of history. Expeditions: Rome is a fully voiced story with various side quests, including five unique companions with their backstories and relationships that the player can build. The player will command their character and companions in small-scale battles and participate in large-scale warfare, claiming more land. Moving your army across these regions will play a large part in the story. In addition, more of the story surrounding our protagonist will begin to surface. Fight for Glory
In Expeditions: Rome’s first DLC Death and Glory, the player can now play the gladiator class and challenge three different Colosseums as they make their way through the story. Of course, players can additionally jump right in if they don’t wish to play through the story in gladiator mode. While the Death and Glory DLC doesn’t add too much to the story in total, it adds an extended story for one of your companions. Additionally, the Colosseums feel right at home in Expeditions: Rome, and it would feel less without them. It should be said that the story in Expeditions: Rome is lengthy and deeper than it looks. In our review of Expeditions: Rome, we had already sunk twenty or so hours by the middle of Act two. Players interested in giving Expeditions: Rome a try and know that getting into’s story is an investment. Players can quickly sink forty to fifty hours of gameplay through its three acts with all of its plot, side quests, combat, and exploration. Gameplay Tons of customization and choice in this CRPG
Expeditions: Rome plays in the classic computer role-playing game (CRPG) style. Built like a dungeons and dragons game, the player is allowed as much freedom as possible. The player will start with their characters customization before starting on their journey. The player will soon get the freedom to explore and play at their own pace. Exploring will yield secrets, side quests, and random events giving players much to do during gameplay. The player will have control of two different units: one containing you and your companions and the second that contains your army. You and your companions will move throughout the regions freely. Your second unit will move from fort to fort as you take more territory and resources. Build your army and take victory
Using your army, you take over enemy forts kicking off large-scale warfare, in which the player will choose from various combat actions. First, there will be an action and selection phase, where the play will choose a tactic card which more can be unlocked for greater versatility. Then watch their choices play out on an animated 2D map of the battle. Each choice will come with a reward and consequence. Next, the Legatus must learn to balance out their army, which is done by choosing the best soldiers. Utilizing one of the many facilities, the player can recruit leaders for battle and companions. These companions will also have skills to help the player in local battles. These local battles will feel closer to dungeons and dragons-style fights. The player will select their team, using what they know to pick the right characters with the right skill to win. The battle will play out in turns, with each party member having a set amount of space they can move, attack, and use items. The stages where a battle takes place are large enough to offer the player a variety of approaches to their foes. Positioning, terrain, and collaboration will be crucial to victory. The Logic Artists game Expeditions: Rome will give players deep combat that allows various approaches to victory. This level of freedom in combat and gameplay makes an engaging game from Logic Artists, but it’s best to know that combat is not fast-paced and requires planning and patience. If you’re looking for fast-paced combat and a more linear story may want to look elsewhere. Graphics Audio
Using the Unreal Engine in a more modern CRPG, the player utilizes a top-down camera that can be locked to the character or freely manipulated. Allowing the player to move around and view the beautiful world created by the team at Logic Artists. The world map can look a bit sparse, but that changes once the player enters the different locations. Inner locations are beautifully designed backdrops to the unfolding story of Expeditions: Rome. A great soundtrack composed by Thomas Farnon features live-recorded music using two orchestras and various talented soloists. The soundtrack for Expeditions: Rome will also be available for purchase for $5.99 if you like the music of the Logic Artists game. Unfortunately, some minor issues happened during our review of Expeditions: Rome. While offering versatility, the camera becomes cumbersome and glitchy at many points. Often getting caught on parts of the terrain or buildings, the player will have to fight the camera. The game, at several points, crashed while playing while in local combat. We found this happened on several occasions during combat. For example, we would ignite an oil barrel or an area with oil. Lighting the large area on fire immediately caused an Unreal Engine crash to the desktop. So if you decide to give Expeditions: Rome a try, this is something to be aware of. Conclusion A historical CRPG that’ s worth a try
The Logic Artists game Expeditions: Rome is a grand tale setting itself in the historical era of Rome. The player will create their version of history by offering a deep and detailed story of political intrigue, warfare, and historical happenings. And with the newest addition of the Death and Glory DLC, players will now also be able to step into the shoes of a gladiator. Despite the various issues players might find while playing Expeditions: Rome, the Logic Artists game is definitely worth trying. If you’re interested in picking the Logic Artists game after reading our Expeditions: Rome review, you can find it on PC via Steam, GOG, and Epic Game Store for $44.99. Additionally, if you are interested in any other Logic Games titles, you can check them out on their development page. Expeditions Rome & Death and Glory DLC Review
