Three New Additions to Amazon Studio’ s ‘ Mr and Mrs Smith’ Reboot

The news of the new cast additions follows the previous casting of Donald Glover and Maya Erskine in the lead roles of the series adaptation, taking the places of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie from the original movie. First released in 2005, the original Mr. and Mrs. Smith centers around John Smith (Brad Pitt), a construction executive, and his wife Jane (Angelina Jolie), who works in tech support. The pair find themselves bored and stuck in what would be a mundane, upper-class marriage if not for the fact that they were both spies, working for rival agencies and hiding the truth of their professions from each other. When John and Jane are told to kill each other following a failed operation, they engage in an increasingly dangerous dance around each other, combining their intimate knowledge of each other and their home with the deadly edge of a secret agent on a mission. However, the couple is ultimately unable to take each other out and decide to work together and kidnap the target of their original failed operation. The Smiths find out that they were turned against each other by their own organizations and, instead of turning against each other, decide to fight for each other and their marriage. Amazon Studios initially announced that they would be making a reboot of Mr. and Mrs. Smith earlier this year, initially starring Donald Glover (Community) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Solo: A Star Wars Story), with Maya Erskine (Scoob!) replacing Waller-Bridge in April 2022 due to “creative differences.” According to Variety, the exact character details for new cast additions Michaela Coel, John Turturro, and Paul Dano are being “kept under wraps,” aside from the fact that the new trio will be appearing in guest roles throughout the Mr. and Mrs. Smith reboot under Amazon Studios. Turturro and Dano have recently acted together in The Batman (2022), with Dano appearing as The Riddler and Turturro as crime boss Carmine Falcone. Michaela Coel boasts previous roles as Arabella in I May Destroy You (2020), Kate Ashby in Black Earth Rising (2018), and Shania in Black Mirror (2016). She also has an upcoming role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The Mr. and Mrs. Smith Amazon Studios reboot was created by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane, who will also serve as executive producers for the series, according to Deadline. Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer will executive produce for New Regency Studios, the studio behind the original film.
