Jeff Bezos Thanks ‘ Rings of Power’ Writers for Ignoring Him
Posted By: Tristan Zeldenon: August 31, 2022In: News, TVTags: Jeff Bezos, Rings of PowerNo Comments Print Email A surprise guest attended the red carpet premiere of The Rings of Power in London, Jeff Bezos. While there, the Amazon founder thanked the writers and showrunners, Patrick McKay and John D. Payne, of The Lord of the Rings prequel for ignoring his suggestions (via Variety). Like any show, studio notes come down from the top, and while usually, writers must adhere to any suggestions from their corporate overlords, they did what they thought best, not what the executive thought would be fitting for the fantasy epic. “Every showrunner’s dream – and I mean every showrunner – their dream is to get notes on scripts and early cuts from the founder and executive chairman,” he jokingly said. “They loved that. I need to thank you both for listening whenever it helped but mostly I need to thank you for ignoring me at exactly the right times.” Jeff Bezos thanked the showrunners and writers of Rings of Power
The Lord of the Rings is one of the most beloved IP in fantasy. Taking on a prequel – coincidentally, it found itself releasing just ahead of the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon – and having it be done by creators who have few credits to their names was a big move for Amazon. The two worked together for an uncredited writing credit on Star Trek Beyond and will produce and write Flash Gordon by director Taika Waititi. Jeff Bezos recognized the Rings of Power executive producers, writers, and showrunners and acknowledged this risky but worthwhile decision. “One of the best decisions we made was to bet on this relatively unknown team. Some people even questioned our choice. But we saw something special.” Jeff Bezos and the team are betting heavily on Rings of Power. While early reactions are positive, it has a lot to prove to fans. It also needs to prove itself to the company after spending over $460 million on its budget on its debut season, and the money spent on the rights, makes this the most expensive season in TV history. The Rings of Power takes place in the Second Age, putting it thousands of years before the events of the original trilogy. It will star Morfydd Clark (Saint Maud), Nazanin Boniadi (Homeland), Peter Mullan (The Underground Railroad), Robert Aramayo (The King’s Man), Benjamin Walker (Jessica Jones), Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Arrow), and Ismael Cruz Cordova (The Undoing).
