First of all, it is worth noting that the quest entrusted to you by Merlin and the opportunity to receive Dream Shards are located in different time frames. To complete Merlin’s errand, you must obtain 10 Dream Shards and convert them into Dreamlight. It is the only case when you should do such a conversion. Dream Shards are relatively rare and world-limited material, while Dreamlight, on the contrary, can be obtained quite a lot just by completing daily tasks. Such an exchange is impractical, and you should save valuable material for higher purposes. If you have unlocked many locations and don’t know where to find Night Thorns, you can unlock the Dazzle Beach location. There are quite a few Night Thorns on this beach, and by destroying them all, you will probably accumulate enough Dream Shards to complete Merlin’s quest.
