Keanu Reeves Constantine Movie Getting Sequel After 17 Years

Ever since the merger with Discovery, Warner Bros. has had a very odd few months of late. Not only has the company rearranged its superhero movie block, but it has also canceled upcoming movies, and now has greenlit a sequel to the Keanu Reeves Constantine movie from 2005, 17 years after the first movie. According to a report from Deadline, the studio is working on a sequel to the supernatural thriller from 2005, and getting the old cast back together, along with the director Francis Lawrence. After debuting with Constantine in 2005, Lawrence went on to direct three of the four Hunger Games movies as well. Oscar-winning Akiva Goldsman, who was one of the producers of the original Constantine movie will be writing the screenplay and producing the sequel as well. Goldsman will be working on the project through his Weed Road Pictures, along with J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella. Interestingly, Abrams was working on a Hellblazer TV show for HBO Max, but that seems to have been shelved at the time of writing. John Constantine Going Strong
When Constantine was released 17 years ago, the character wasn’t as well known when compared to the other giants from the DC pantheon. But Constantine had the longest-running comic series at that time. The movie grossed over $230 million worldwide, which is good compared to its budget of around $85 million. In comparison to another DC movie at the time, Batman Begins had a budget of $150 million. Ever since Reeves’ portrayal of John Constantine, the character’s shoes have been filled by Matt Ryan who was introduced in 2014 in his TV series that eventually had a crossover with The Flash and Arrow. He also voiced the titular character in various DC animated movies as well as the Harley Quinn show on HBO Max. Here’s to hoping the upcoming Constantine sequel can live up to the beloved original.
