Top 10 Best Simpsons Treehouse of Horror Segments Ranked

Posted By: Donnie Smithon: September 27, 2022In: News, TVTags: Halloween, SimpsonsNo Comments Print Email Every Halloween, fans tune in to see the latest edition of The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror. These specials contain three stories that allow writers to go crazy and do whatever they want. These segments aren’t canon, so anything goes. These spooky specials have been going strong for 32 years with no signs of slowing down. From the gory to the macabre, these specials are the highlight of any Simpsons season. Today, we are looking at ten of the best Treehouse of Horror segments of all time.

10 Desperately Seeking Xena

This is one of the few segments that aren’t particularly scary or even horror-themed, but it is still a fan favorite. In it, Bart and Lisa receive superpowers after a radioactive blast. Their first adventure involves them saving Xena: Warrior Princess star Lucy Lawless after Comic Book Guy kidnaps her. Comic Book Guy is a villain known as The Collector, and he plans on kidnapping his favorite pop culture idols and preserving them. This segment is a loving parody of comic books and nerd culture while also poking fun at obsessive fans. While not spooky, this is still a worthy contender for one of the best Treehouse of Horror segments.

9 Hungry Are The Damned

The first special, simply titled The Simpsons Halloween Special, also contains one of the best segments. The Simpsons are having a barbecue in their backyard when they are abducted by aliens. The aliens are extremely generous and even give them extreme amounts of food. Lisa, being suspicious, deduces that the aliens are fattening The Simpsons up so they can be eaten. This episode is a loose parody of a classic Twilight Zone episode and introduces classic characters Kang and Kodos. Outside of some of the funniest jokes in the entire series, what makes this segment so great is it plays with viewer expectations. Fans will think the segment is going a certain way but does a complete 180 in a hilarious fashion.

8 The Terror of Tiny Toon

What makes this one of the best Treehouse of Horror segments is that Bart and Lisa are able to fully interact with the characters of their favorite show, Itchy and Scratchy. While using a plutonium-powered remote, the siblings are sucked into the tv and enter the world of Itchy and Scratchy. The cat and mouse duo then set their sights on Bart and Lisa, forcing the siblings to find a way to escape. In The Simpsons, The Itchy and Scratchy Show is an overly violent parody of Tom and Jerry. Because of this, the two must endure some incredibly violent torment as they try to escape the television. This overt violence to beloved characters is what makes the Treehouse of Horror specials so much fun to watch.

7 It’ s The Grand Pumpkin Milhouse

It took until 2008 for there to be a parody of It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, and it was well worth the wait. Here, Milhouse waits in the pumpkin patch for the Grand Pumpkin to appear. He finally does, although he isn’t the happy mascot Milhouse hoped for. The Grand Pumpkin actually wants revenge on humans for carving and eating pumpkins, so he goes on a killing spree. This violent segment is made even funnier because the art style and music are modeled after the classic Peanuts special. Seeing The Simpsons in violent situations is funny enough, but bringing Peanuts into the fold adds a whole other level. Like Hungry are the Damned, this episode plays with viewer expectations by making the titular pumpkin a killer.

6 The Devil and Homer Simpson

This is not only one of the best Treehouse of Horror segments, it is one of the most memorable. Homer’s love for donuts causes him to sell his soul to the devil, who takes the shape of Ned Flanders. Homer is then put on trial for his soul while he spends time being tortured in Hell. The scenes of Homer being tortured are highlights, as they include some of the best gags in Simpsons history including the Ironic Punishment Division and God giving Homer an I.O.U. for a brain. The episode ends with the classic imagery of Homer’s head as a donut. The best joke is seeing Flanders as the Devil, as he is usually hyper-religious.

5 Clown Without Pity

Child’s Play was big when this episode came out, so naturally, a parody of sorts had to appear. In this segment, Homer buys a Krusty doll for Bart from a shady store. It seems to be nice to Bart but mean to Homer. In fact, it is trying to kill him. Nothing seems to work, even throwing the doll into a bottomless pit. When things seem most dire, The Simpsons discover all they needed to do was flip a switch from good to evil on his back. This humorous episode may not be as violent as some of the others, but it still makes for a fun and spooky time.

4 Nightmare Cafeteria

Nightmare Cafeteria is frequently credited as being the darkest Treehouse of Horror segment. This is for good reason, as it involves the staff of Springfield Elementary eating the students. Bart learns that Principal Skinner and the other teachers are using detention students as meat for various lunch items, usually based on the victims. At one point, teachers are chasing Bart with bloody kitchen items. Bart then wakes up to discover it was all a dream. He can’t seem to catch a break as a fog rolls in that turns everyone inside out. As dark as it is, Nightmare Cafeteria is frequently mentioned among the best Treehouse of Horror segments as well as one of the funniest.

3 Homer3

Homer3 sees Homer try to hide from Patty and Selma. In doing so, he inadvertently enters an alternate dimension where he is a CG character. CG in this form was still new at this time. In fact, this episode just barely predates Toy Story, which was the first feature-length computer-generated movie. In addition to being groundbreaking at the time, this episode is also just plain funny. Seeing Homer interact with this new world allows for some unique visual gags that the traditional 2D style did not allow for. Many fans picture the CG Homer when they imagine classic Simpson imagery, and the episode it spawned from is just as classic.

2 Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace

It is shocking it took this long for there to be a Nightmare on Elm Street parody on the show. Having Groundskeeper Willie in the role of Freddy Krueger is as funny as it sounds and makes for easily one of the best Treehouse of Horror segments. Willie is out for revenge after he burns to death because of a faulty thermostat. He hunts children in their dreams, and it is up to the Simpson siblings to stop him. What makes this episode so great are the dream scenes. They feature creative sequences that prove the world of Nightmare on Elm Street could translate into animation if producers wanted it to.

1 The Shinning

When fans think of Treehouse of Horror, this is usually the segment they think of. In this parody of The Shining, Homer is tasked with being the caretaker for one of Mr. Burns’ properties. Homer soon begins to go crazy due to boredom and attempts to kill his family. This segment has some of the funniest moments in the entire series, such as Homer scaring himself while looking in a mirror. This episode serves not just as a parody but as a tribute to one of the greatest ghost stories ever told. While new Treehouse of Horror specials are released every year, fans look forward to rewatching this segment every year. Tags: HalloweenSimpsons Previous
