God of War Ragnarok Art Director Talks Character Design

Posted By: Rafael Hernandezon: October 20, 2022In: Gaming, NewsTags: God of War: Ragnarok, PlayStation 5No Comments Print Email Sony has released a new PlayStation Blog featuring an interview about God of War Ragnarok. In this interview, they speak to art director Raf Grassetti about the character design of Kratos and his son Atreus. This interview comes with the release of the official God of War Ragnarok Cosplay Guide.

Interview with Raf Grassetti

During the interview with Grassetti, he started talking about the new look for Kratos. For God of War Ragnarok, they didn’t want to make huge changes and decided to keep his right pauldron from the previous game. They also wanted to keep his iconic tattoos visible, of course. He also said that many of the decisions on Kratos’ design serve some kind of practical purpose. This includes his pauldron protecting his dominant arm and his bracers being able to shield him if needed. Grassetti also talks about reflecting on Kratos’ journey up to this point in his design. We can see things like the red Spartan skirt material used in his original trilogy look, as well as the bandages he wore to hide his past during 2018’s God of War, now being used to help keep his armor together. The PlayStation Blog interview then goes on to the character design for Atreus, who’s had a more significant change due to his growth spurt. Because of how iconic Kratos is, the art team had to figure out a special design for Atreus so that he’d be able to stand next to his father. For God of War Ragnarok, he keeps the pieces symbolizing both of his parents. These are his yellow scarf to represent Faye and his red skirt piece taken from Kratos’ outfit. The art team wanted to reflect the fact that Atreus is trying to find out who he is at this point in his life with the colors in his outfit. The bright yellow in his outfit represents the Giants and helps hint at his heritage from Greek mythology. All the red in his design, from his cloth piece to his arrows, represent the influence Kratos and his aggressiveness have had on him.
